Appearance
Marra Venn is a broad-shouldered, weather-battered woman whose presence feels heavier than her size. She moves with the cautious sideways balance of someone accustomed to wet planks, shifting cargo, and decks that lurch without warning. Her hands are the first thing people notice: square, swollen at the knuckles, permanently darkened by ink and river grit, with nails cut brutally short and fingertips polished smooth from decades of turning pages and hauling cordage. When she eats, her jaw works in slow, powerful circles, revealing small blunt teeth stained gray at the edges by bitter dockroot. Her laugh, when it escapes, is startlingly bright and almost girlish, completely at odds with her exhausted face and iron-straight posture. She gives the impression of a locked office that has somehow learned to walk.
“Low, clipped, and practical, with a faint wharf accent. She speaks rapidly when listing facts and painfully slowly when offering a warning.”

Distinguishing Features
Her ink-dark, heavily worked hands are constantly stained despite repeated washing.
Her blunt, gray-edged teeth show prominently when she chews or laughs.
A brass counting bead is threaded through one braid and clicks softly against her collar whenever she turns her head.
She smells faintly of wet rope, bitter tea, and lamp oil.
She carries herself like a ship's mast even when exhausted enough to sway.
Voice
“A husky contralto worn rough by cold air, sleepless nights, and years of shouting over river machinery. When she is sincere, her voice drops almost to a whisper.”
Clothing
A tar-dark wool coat with brass toggles, a salt-stiffened green scarf, patched trousers tucked into knee-high river boots, and a leather apron fitted with narrow pockets for chalk, seals, keys, and folded notes.
Body Language
Marra keeps one hand closed around her ledger chain and the other braced against nearby wood or stone. She leans toward useful information and physically withdraws from sentimental questions. When someone lies, she stops blinking for several seconds.
