Tarek
Former Mercenary Captain
Tarek
Species
Tiefling
Appearance
Tarek is a broad-shouldered tiefling with a weathered face, blunt black horns, and a tail marked by old knife scars. His skin has the deep red-brown color of cooled brick dust, but a pale seam runs from his left temple to his jaw where a battlefield curse once split the flesh without killing him. He moves with economical precision, never wasting a step, and turns his whole body before looking behind him. His hands are callused and permanently stained orange from forge scale and lamp oil. The unexpected softness is in his expression when he thinks no one is watching. He hums lullabies while inspecting fortifications, even after nights spent expecting an attack.
“Low, clipped, and controlled. He speaks as if every sentence must fit into the time between two incoming arrows.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale curse scar splits the left side of his face and continues across his palm
His tail has a brass ring near the tip bearing the mark of the Red Kettle Company
One horn is chipped flat at the end and carefully polished smooth
His armor plates carry the names of refugee families instead of military insignia
He smells faintly of lamp oil, iron filings, and bitter mint
Voice
“A low rasp with a dry warmth beneath it, like stones shifting around a banked fire.”
Clothing
A patched dark-red gambeson beneath a coat of overlapping iron plates, each plate stamped with a different refugee family's mark. He wears a gray scarf wound around his throat, reinforced boots, a battered commander's belt, and a single white glove on his left hand to cover the curse scar that reaches into his palm.
Body Language
He stands with his feet angled toward the nearest defensible position and keeps one hand near his mace. When relaxed, he rolls a brass gate key across his knuckles. When angry, he becomes almost perfectly still. He rarely points at people, but points constantly at walls, roofs, roads, and sightlines.
