Appearance
Mara Venn is a narrow, weather-hardened human woman who seems built from reeds, cord, and stubbornness. Her skin is sun-browned across the nose and cheeks, with pale freckles clustered like seeds beneath both eyes. She wears a brilliantly yellow headband that catches the light even under a forest canopy, though it is patched with tiny blue stitches made from old fishing line. Her permanently green fingernails are glossy with plant resin, and the skin around them is cracked into fine dark lines. Mara moves with a quick, birdlike precision, pausing mid-step whenever a scent changes. Her face is sharp and alert, but her hands are unexpectedly gentle, cradling fruit as if it were an injured animal. The contradictory impression she leaves is that of someone fragile enough to snap in a strong wind, yet impossible to push off her chosen path.
“Quick, precise, and full of sensory comparisons. Mara often pauses to sniff before answering.”

Distinguishing Features
A permanently vivid yellow headband visible from a surprising distance.
Green resin stains beneath every fingernail.
A crescent scar under her left ear shaped like a leaf.
She sniffs every fruit before touching it, even familiar ones.
A missing upper canine gives her smile a crooked, foxlike quality.
Voice
“A quick, dry alto with a faint rasp, like paper dragged across bark. Her voice softens dramatically when speaking to children, injured animals, or plants.”
Clothing
A faded moss-green tunic, patched brown trousers, soft leather boots wrapped with vine fiber, a yellow headband, a weatherproof shoulder cloak, and a belt crowded with labeled pouches and tiny wooden tongs.
Body Language
Mara leans toward interesting smells, keeps her elbows close to her ribs, and taps her thumb against each fingertip while thinking. When lying, she becomes unnaturally still and stops sniffing.
