Appearance
Haldor Venn is a narrow, weather-beaten man whose body seems assembled from old rope and stubbornness. His face is furrowed deeply around the mouth, as if he has spent decades refusing to scream. One eye is a normal gray-green, while the other is clouded black from the pupil outward, yet it still tracks movement with unsettling precision. His hands are broad, cracked, and permanently dark beneath the fingernails from soil that no soap can remove. He moves with the careful sideways balance of someone walking across loose grave earth, never placing his full weight anywhere until he has tested the ground. He smells faintly of candle grease, wet wool, and iron. The contradictory impression he leaves is that of a frail old caretaker who is somehow difficult to surprise, frighten, or physically move.
“Low, dry, and deliberate. Haldor speaks as if every sentence is being recorded for a future burial register.”

Distinguishing Features
A clouded black left eye that reflects candlelight like polished coal
Seven mismatched iron rings, each bearing a nearly worn-away village name
A thumb-sized notch missing from his right ear, bitten off by an undead villager during the first sealing
Soil permanently embedded beneath his fingernails
A thin line of black wax sealed beneath the skin of his lower lip
Voice
“A dry baritone with a faint rasp, like a shovel dragged across frozen ground. When Haldor is frightened, his voice becomes softer rather than louder.”
Clothing
A patched brown wool coat, a salt-stained undertunic, heavy mud-caked boots, and a faded green sash marking him as the valley's burial warden. He wears seven mismatched iron rings, one for each villager sealed beneath the hills.
Body Language
Haldor keeps his shoulders slightly hunched, as though expecting a low ceiling or a blow from above. He rubs the blackened eye with one thumb when lying, folds his hands over his stomach when listening, and turns his head toward distant sounds before anyone else notices them. When remorse breaks through his control, he grips the edge of a table until his knuckles pale.
