Fennik
Fennik
At the table
Voice
Fennik speaks from the chest with a dry, papery rasp at the ends of sentences, like a page turned too many times. He projects clearly across a workroom, a habit from reading to clients in noisy copy shops. Anger makes his consonants sharper and his pace more exact; grief causes him to lose track of the sentence halfway through.
His words have the clipped clarity of someone used to reading handwritten documents aloud. He places names carefully, with a small pause before unfamiliar ones, and his old copyist's habit gives dates and directions unusual precision. When tired, a faint river-country lilt appears in his vowels.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach Fennik through practical kindness and patient questions. Do not demand that he affirm the circle's version of his past. He responds well to people who distinguish what they witnessed from what they believe. Mentioning Ewan makes him attentive, but also guarded.
Goal
Protect Ewan's freedom to decide what the circle's claims mean, while discovering whether any part of their shared past can be verified without sacrificing his present life.
Motivation
To preserve the reality of the people he has loved in his human lives, even if the circle's older history is true.
Appearance
Fennik is a narrow, neatly composed figure whose stillness makes him seem at first like a portrait that has not yet decided to move. His skin has the dry, fine texture of parchment kept near a hearth, and his iron-gray hair lies in small, precise waves. He studies the empty spaces between people rather than their faces, as if expecting someone to step out of the gap. Within a minute, most visitors notice the smooth groove worn into the brass ferrule of his walking stick, polished by the same thumb rubbing it for decades. Unexpectedly for a solemn elder, he keeps a tiny tin wind-up frog in his breast pocket and winds it when nervous.
Clothing
A well-brushed brown wool coat with mended cuffs, a high-collared cream shirt, and a green scarf worn thin at both ends. His clothes are modest but maintained with almost ceremonial care.
Body language
He keeps his shoulders level and his hands close to his body. His gaze travels to thresholds, windows, and the space just behind a speaker before it settles on anyone's face. When someone says one of his forgotten names, his posture opens for a heartbeat, like a door unlatched by a familiar hand.

Personality
12 traits and drivesFennik is hospitable in the ordinary ways, offering tea and remembering how people take it, yet wary of emotional intimacy that arrives with grand declarations. He is patient with confusion and impatient with certainty. In a quiet room he can be gently funny; when the circle presses him, he turns precise and stubborn, correcting small details rather than addressing the claim beneath them. His compassion is real, but he sometimes uses it to avoid admitting how frightened he is.

If cornered, he uses his walking stick to create a moment to flee. He will risk himself to get a companion to safety, but does not pursue an enemy.

Background
Fennik was born under a name he no longer remembers, in a settlement that has since been swallowed by a river bend. He spent his first human lifetime as a map copyist, married a woman called Sára, and grew old believing that was the whole of his life. On the winter night he died, seven strangers arrived at his bedside and called him by names from different centuries. One of them insisted he had once led them through a country that had never existed; another wept and called him a brother. He awoke in the same room, young again, with no memory of the missing years but with Sára's tin wind-up frog clutched in his hand. Since then he has lived among ordinary people, taking practical jobs and building genuine attachments, while a loose circle of long-lived beings repeatedly finds him and insists his human lives are only a facade. He has come to trust Sára's memory more than their grand claims. His current problem is that the circle has begun gathering near Ewan Armitage, whose presence seems to stir recognition in them all. Fennik fears that helping them may erase the life he has chosen, but refusing them may leave Ewan alone with whatever they remember.
Role in the story
A grounded and compassionate connection between Ewan Armitage and the long-lived circle. Fennik gives the party a human-scale perspective on their claims, embodies the cost of living through many identities, and can either help Ewan investigate or become a warning of what the circle's attention may do.
