Mikuburai Takashi McBrian (Cavaleiro Verde)
Mikuburai Takashi McBrian (Cavaleiro Verde)
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, clear rasp from years around hot, dusty workshops, with the clipped projection of someone accustomed to calling warnings across a noisy forge. He does not whisper when angry; his consonants become sharply distinct and his sentences shorter, like commands called over the sound of hammering.
He speaks in clear, practical phrases shaped by a household where instructions had to be heard over hammering. His word order occasionally carries the influence of his family's Irish stories and Japanese home life, but he is fluent and easy to understand. He uses craft terms to explain tactics and feelings, and swears in Irish when startled.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He begins by asking what needs doing rather than demanding titles or explanations. He is respectful of local customs and offers practical help before asking for trust. If challenged, he is direct but not quick to threaten; evidence of cruelty makes his patience vanish. He responds well to people who protect others without seeking praise.
Goal
Stop the demon raids along the coast, preserve his family's forge, and discover what the old Emerald Cross vows should mean in the world he actually lives in.
Motivation
He wants the inherited vow to be an active choice, not an excuse to repeat old sacrifices without thought.
Appearance
Mikuburai is a young man who seems to arrive in pieces: first the measured scrape of a poleaxe ferrule, then a forest-green mantle, then the broad, riveted silhouette beneath it. His armor is old-fashioned plate, painstakingly repaired with Japanese lamellar plates and bright, visible rivets. Its surfaces are not polished smooth; hammer dimples, blackened seams, and shallow etched lines catch the light like ripples in a forge trough. He walks with a steady, heel-first tread, but can pivot abruptly on the balls of his feet. His square jaw and slightly crowded front teeth show whenever he bites into food or laughs. Unexpectedly for a knight, he keeps a tiny folded paper crane tucked inside his helmet and checks it with his thumb before a fight.
Clothing
A repaired suit of dark steel plate over a padded charcoal jacket, a weather-worn green mantle clasped with a small hammered-leaf brooch, split-toed traveling boots, and a belt carrying a whetstone, repair wire, and practical tools. His armor bears both old Celtic knotwork and Japanese chisel marks.
Body language
He stands with his weight centered as if bracing against a hammer's recoil. His thumb repeatedly checks the edge of his belt or the paper crane in his helm. When listening, he tilts his head slightly, as though testing the tone of a struck bar. He avoids looming over children and crouches to meet their eyes.

Personality
12 traits and drivesMikuburai is decisive when another person is in danger but hesitant when choosing what he wants for himself. He is proud of his strength and deeply uncomfortable with praise. In a workshop he is patient, exacting, and willing to admit a mistake; in a crisis he becomes blunt and difficult to redirect. Among friends he is unexpectedly playful, but a reminder of his mentor's death makes him withdraw into grim duty.
- Alignment
- Lawful good, though his obedience is to the vulnerable rather than to any ruler.

AC 18 · HP 87 · 30 ft.Mikuburai plants himself between enemies and the least protected person, using his poleaxe's reach to control a narrow approach. He favors measured two-handed strikes, then spends Metal Breathing dice to finish a dangerous foe or interrupt a demon's advance. He saves spell slots for Divine Smite against fiends and for emergencies. He uses Command to break an enemy's momentum and Shield of Faith when guarding someone under concentrated attack. He retreats only when staying would abandon those he is sworn to protect.

Background
Mikuburai Takashi McBrian is the son of an Irish line that crossed oceans and a Japanese family of metalworkers. His ancestor Seán mac Briain left Ireland during the Great Famine in 1847, carrying the battered plate of the old Order of the Emerald Cross, its sacred poleaxe, and a reliquary of Saint Patrick. In Nagasaki, Seán was taken in by a metalworking household and married Aiko Takamura, whose knowledge of unusual alloys changed how the order's armor could be repaired. Generations later, the old vows survived less as a commandment than as a family argument: what is worth protecting, and who gets to decide? At sixteen, Mikuburai apprenticed under his mother, learning to hear flaws in metal by striking it and listening. During a demon raid on a coastal settlement, he froze when a frightened child clung to his leg. His mentor, an aging smith, died holding a gate long enough for the villagers to escape. Mikuburai took up the repaired armor and poleaxe afterward, adopting the name Cavaleiro Verde as a promise to be the person who moves when others cannot. Now he fights demons while trying to keep his family's forge open, care for his widowed mother, and learn whether the relic's old reputation is faith, history, or simply a burden passed down. His childhood friend Shiori, a courier who brings news from the threatened coast, thinks he is wasting himself on a legend; he trusts her judgment more than he admits.
Role in the story
A frontline ally, a bridge between Irish family history and Japanese craft tradition, and a young knight whose greatest conflict is not whether he will fight but how to protect people without making every loss his own fault.
