Pell Tarrow
Pell Tarrow
At the table
“I regret the cost,”
Voice
A calm, gravelly tenor that sounds reassuring until the listener realizes he has quietly described a catastrophe as a supply problem.
His voice is low, dry, and precise, with a river-port accent softened by years of caravan trade. He speaks quickly when discussing formulas and slowly when discussing death. He often pauses before nouns, as if selecting the least inflammatory word.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Pell is personable, useful, and deliberately reasonable. He offers accurate information about paths, monsters, diseases, and storm-sap before asking for anything. He presents his plan as triage rather than conquest, emphasizing that some communities will die if nobody acts. He offers separate bargains to different party members if he senses disagreement. If the party discovers the prepared extraction team, he admits enough of the truth to preserve cooperation, then attempts to redirect blame toward the consortium. If exposed fully, he becomes an enemy only when negotiation fails or the party threatens the living crystal before he can secure it.
Goal
Retrieve the living crystal from the Weeping Root, stabilize the endless storm, and redirect its waters toward a controlled plantation zone.
Motivation
Pell wants to save lives on a scale large enough to make his past sacrifice seem defensible. He also wants to prove that careful control can succeed where greed, superstition, and uncontrolled nature have failed.
Appearance
Pell is a narrow, weather-beaten man with the posture of someone who has spent years leaning over worktables and ship rails. Rain beads on his skin but never seems to soak him completely, gathering instead in silver tracks along his jaw and knuckles. His hands are stained amber, green, and violet from old reagents, with one thumbnail permanently clouded white. He moves carefully and economically, placing each foot as though the mud has a memory. His expression is mild, almost grandfatherly, yet his eyes constantly measure exits, supplies, and weaknesses. The unexpected contradiction is his immaculate smile, complete with one polished gold tooth, which appears absurdly cheerful beneath his exhausted face.
Clothing
A patched oilskin coat hangs over layered linen and a stained gray vest. His trousers are tied above the ankle with red cord, and his boots are wrapped in strips of rubberized leaf. A belt of corked vials crosses his chest beneath the coat. Every piece of clothing has been repaired by hand, except for one expensive silver clasp bearing the half-scraped mark of the Far Ledger Consortium.
Body language
Pell keeps his elbows close to his ribs and his hands visible, presenting himself as harmless. When lying, he touches the gold tooth with his tongue. When frightened, he becomes unusually still and starts counting under his breath in a language learned from old caravan guards.

Personality
18 traits and drivesPell is warm in conversation, exacting in practice, and frighteningly comfortable with unequal outcomes. He can spend an hour repairing a stranger's water filter, then calmly explain why an entire village must be relocated for the sake of a larger medical supply. He is generous with knowledge but guarded with materials. Around desperate people, he becomes compassionate and almost paternal. Around wealthy patrons, he becomes polished, flattering, and ruthlessly transactional. When guilt surfaces, he talks faster and starts making lists.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 22 · 30 feetPell avoids direct combat. He begins with Blinding Reagent, retreats toward difficult terrain, and uses his sprayer to poison the most dangerous-looking opponent. He uses Emergency Tonic on an ally or himself only when necessary. If cornered, he cuts ropes, overturns reagent crates, floods walkways, and releases alchemical scents that draw nearby monsters. He surrenders if reduced below 6 hit points, but attempts to bargain for his life and the survival of his research.

Background
Pell Tarrow was born in a river-port town far beyond the Verdant Maw, the second son of a cooper who made barrels for ships and medicine merchants. He learned early that a sealed container could mean the difference between profit and starvation. As a young man, he joined the Far Ledger Consortium as a survey chemist, testing soils, medicinal plants, and trade routes for distant investors. He became valuable because he could make dangerous discoveries sound like manageable expenses. His exile began after he falsified a disease report. A mining settlement was suffering from a wasting sickness, and Pell discovered that the consortium's refining runoff caused it. He altered the report to blame local water spirits, hoping to buy time to develop a cure. The cure worked for some, but the delay killed dozens, including his younger brother, who had traveled to the settlement as a courier. The consortium buried the incident, then blamed Pell when a rival faction threatened to expose the records. He was stripped of rank and sent into the Verdant Maw under the pretense of permanent field service. There, Pell discovered storm-sap, a rare substance produced when the endless rain passes through the living roots of the forest. Properly refined, it can slow wasting diseases and strengthen weather charms. Improperly extracted, it poisons soil, drives predators mad, and weakens the rain forest's ancient water cycle. Pell believes he can stabilize the storm by retrieving a living crystal from the Weeping Root and redirecting rainfall toward a controlled plantation zone. His plan could save wealthy settlements and create medicine on a vast scale, but it would deliberately deprive poorer communities and damage the sacred ecology of the Maw. Pell stole survey records from Marra, records that map old root channels and hidden settlement wells. He treats Marra's anger as a professional disagreement, though he knows the theft may have doomed her people. He has also trespassed in Oruza's sacred groves and used sacramental resins as bait. The monsters of the forest have tasted his experimental alchemical scents and now associate his presence with blood, heat, and easy prey. Pell has prepared an extraction team in secret, including hired porters, two consortium scouts, and a cage designed for the living crystal. He still prefers to bargain with the player characters, because he considers them more adaptable and less expensive than his current employees.
Role in the story
Pell is an optional ally, quest rival, information broker, or betrayal target in the rain-soaked Verdant Maw. He can guide the party through monster territory, explain the medicinal value of storm-sap, and offer bargains involving medicine, stolen records, specialized equipment, or consortium secrets. His connection to Marra emerges through the stolen survey records. His conflict with Oruza centers on sacrilege against the Weeping Root and nearby shrines. The monsters reveal his experimental bait through altered hunting patterns and alchemical scents. If the party learns that Pell has already prepared an extraction team, he may become an enemy after a tense negotiation, especially if they refuse to let him reach the living crystal. If defeated, he can surrender with evidence and a formula, or trigger his unstable storm-sap cache in one final attempt to make the party choose between pursuing him and saving nearby villagers.

- OruzaPell used sacred resin and carved measuring marks into a protected root shrine. Oruza considers this sacrilege, while Pell insists he was conducting necessary measurements.
- The Verdant Maw's monstersPell has tested experimental bait and alchemical scents on them. Some creatures now hunt him by smell, while others protect his camps because they have been conditioned to expect food.
