Taran Kett
Taran Kett
At the table
Voice
A clear, slightly rough-edged voice shaped by calling over farmyard noise and dockside bustle. He speaks at a brisk pace when discussing plans, with hard consonants on practical details; when he is tired, the words come out more slowly and the island vowels of home become more noticeable.
His words carry the clipped practicality of farm chores and dockside errands, with occasional sailing terms picked up from port workers. He asks short questions when wary and rushes into long explanations when he wants to prove he has thought a problem through. He uses Teresa's old weaving metaphors when comforting someone, though he seems embarrassed when he notices.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Taran responds warmly to straightforward kindness, shared work, and people who respect Zaida. He is cautious about promises of family or belonging and may shut down if pressed to confide too quickly. He will trade honest help for information about Tatsuo, but reacts fiercely if someone threatens his sister or mocks Teresa's memory.
Goal
Find Tatsuo, learn why he left, and discover whether there is any place for Taran in his father's life.
Motivation
Taran wants the truth about his father, but beneath that he wants proof that being left behind was not his fault.
Appearance
Taran is a thirteen-year-old boy with messy black hair that springs up again no matter how often he wets it down, light tan skin, and brown eyes that keep counting exits even while he smiles. He stands with his weight on the balls of his feet, as if a floor might suddenly become a gangplank. His short sword hangs low at his side, its leather grip worn smooth in one thumb-shaped patch from anxious rubbing. The unexpected thing about him is the careful, almost reverent way he handles scraps of woven cloth, folding each one into a neat square before putting it away. He moves with a dockside shuffle that can turn, without warning, into a quick, straight rush. People often remember that he looks ready to run, but keeps stepping back toward whoever needs help.
Clothing
A patched brown jacket over a coarse shirt, faded trousers tucked into scuffed boots, and a broad belt holding his sword and a small pouch. Teresa's woven cloth is stitched inside the jacket where only a careful search would reveal it.
Body language
He waits balanced over his toes, shoulders slightly forward, one hand near the sword hilt and the other rubbing the worn patch of its grip. When relaxed, he sits on the edge of things instead of settling back. If someone earns his trust, he turns his whole body toward them and stops watching the exits.

Personality
14 traits and drivesTaran is kind in action but guarded in confession. He will share food with a stranger, yet dodge questions about what he needs himself. Around children and frightened people he becomes patient and gently funny; around adults who make promises, he grows watchful and literal. When angry, he acts quickly and speaks plainly, then regrets the risk he took once everyone is safe.

AC 17 · HP 31 · 30 ft.Taran tries to keep danger away from civilians and allies, using his shield and short sword to hold a narrow approach. He uses Action Surge when someone is in immediate danger or an enemy is about to escape, and Second Wind only when staying upright matters more than pride. He favors Fire Bolt against distant threats, Thunderwave to make space when surrounded, and Shield to blunt a dangerous hit. He has little experience with prolonged battles and can overcommit when an enemy threatens someone he cares about.

Background
Taran was born in a rundown farmhouse on the rural Island of Aurei, the youngest child of Teresa and Tatsuo. Tatsuo was a professional adventurer who left after Taran's birth and never returned. Philandros, Taran's older brother, blamed the baby for their father's departure and eventually ran away, hoping to find Tatsuo and join him. Zaida, the eldest, stayed close to Teresa and later found laboring work on the docks of Feasgar. Teresa raised the children by weaving and by insisting that a torn thing could still be useful if someone took the time to mend it. Taran learned to manage a short sword from an old practice blade and a patient retired caravan guard who passed through their district; his strength came from farm work, hauling water, and stubbornness. His first magic appeared during a winter squall, when a falling roof beam stopped inches above Zaida's head amid a crackle of blue light. Teresa's death left Taran alone at the farmhouse. He gathered food, his sword, a few of her weaving scraps, and what money he could find, then traveled to Feasgar to seek Zaida and use her home as a base while he searches for Tatsuo. Zaida took him in, but worries that his search will draw danger to their door. Taran now runs small errands at the docks, listens for adventurers' names, and tries to learn control over the magic that flares when someone is threatened.
Role in the story
A young ally whose search for his absent father can draw the party into dockside rumors, adventurer rivalries, and the consequences of abandonment. Taran's journey also tests whether he can build chosen bonds without giving up the hope of finding his family.
“Tatsuo was a professional adventurer who left after Taran's birth and never returned.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. Zaida's dockside neighbors know him as her younger brother, and he sometimes earns small jobs from port workers.
