Tavin Reed
Tavin Reed
At the table
“I am afraid.”
Voice
A low, clear voice with a dry humor and a slight rasp from years of smoke, cold air, and calling warnings through dense trees.
Quick, vivid, and practical, with sudden pauses whenever the geometric mark aches. Tavin speaks as though every conversation is taking place while walking somewhere important.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Tavin is eager to meet travelers who seem competent, especially anyone carrying medicine, tools, maps, or news from the wider world. They offer a guarded version of the truth at first, then test the characters with practical questions about survival. If treated with respect, Tavin offers to guide the party to the dungeon entrance. If mocked, dismissed, or ordered around, they become sarcastic and may lead the characters through a more dangerous route. If the characters investigate the palm mark, Tavin admits more than they intended, but hides the worst dreams until trust is established.
Goal
Convince Dornruh to establish controlled trade routes while leading someone capable to the buried ruin and uncovering the fate of the missing travelers.
Motivation
Tavin wants people to stop treating Dornruh as a place that must hide from the world. They are driven by guilt over the missing travelers, loyalty to the settlement, and a desperate need to prove that courage can protect people better than secrecy.
Appearance
Tavin is a lean young human with the weathered look of someone who has spent more nights beneath trees than beneath roofs. Their skin is freckled with pale scars from thorn vines, their fingers are stained green from crushed leaves, and their movements are quick, economical, and slightly too abrupt. A curtain of dark copper hair falls into their eyes, usually held back by a strip of red cloth taken from a missing traveler's coat. Their face suggests restless confidence until someone mentions the buried ruin, when their expression briefly becomes distant and frightened. The unexpected contradiction is their hands: callused and scarred like a laborer's, yet they handle fragile moth wings and medicinal petals with exquisite gentleness.
Clothing
A patched brown cloak treated with pine resin, a faded green tunic, mud-stained trousers, soft leather boots, fingerless gloves, and a red strip of cloth tied around the wrist. Several pockets contain folded maps, dried fungi, chalk, and emergency rations.
Body language
Tavin leans forward when listening, constantly tracks exits and windows, and gestures with two fingers as if tracing invisible paths in the air. When the mark aches, their marked hand curls shut and their shoulders move in tiny rhythmic pulses.

They believe the forest should be understood rather than feared, but the buried ruin has begun teaching them that some things may deserve fear.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 7 · 30 feetTavin avoids a fair fight. They use cover, elevation, tangled roots, and misleading trails to divide enemies. They begin with the shortbow, target whoever appears to be directing the others, and retreat toward prepared escape routes. If an ally is wounded, Tavin becomes dangerously aggressive and may abandon caution. When the mark pulses, Tavin occasionally moves toward danger against their better judgment.

Background
Tavin was born in Dornruh to a family of charcoal burners and learned the forest by following deer trails, fox paths, and the old routes used by smugglers before the settlement existed. At fourteen, Tavin survived a winter storm after becoming separated from their family. They spent three nights inside the hollow of a fallen ash tree, sharing the shelter with a wounded black stag. The experience changed them from a reckless child into someone who believed the forest was dangerous but not cruel. They began guiding travelers for Rusk & Nail, carrying messages and supplies between Dornruh and distant roads. Tavin also formed a secret friendship with Mara Venn, the tavern keeper, who lets them sleep in the laundry loft when nightmares become too severe. Recently, several travelers vanished beyond the eastern boundary. Tavin followed their trail into a sinkhole and touched a buried geometric door beneath the roots. They found no bodies, only abandoned packs and a humming mark that appeared on their palm. Fenroot Remedies has been treating the mark with bitter poultices, but the pattern keeps returning. Tavin now wants Dornruh to open its trails to legitimate trade, believing medicine, tools, and guards would save lives. Elder Ysra's secrecy infuriates them, though Tavin does not yet understand that the secrecy is partly intended to keep the buried ruin dormant.
Role in the story
Tavin is the party's first reliable guide into the shifting forest and the most immediate human connection to the buried ruin. They can lead the characters to the dungeon entrance, explain the recent disappearances, and reveal the conflict between Dornruh's secrecy and its need for outside aid. If ignored, Tavin becomes a tragic warning as the mark gradually turns them into an unwilling servant of the awakening power.
