Hadrik Vell
Hadrik Vell
At the table
Voice
A gravelly, dry-edged rasp shaped by mine dust, pipe smoke, and years of giving terse instructions underground. He projects easily across a tavern when he chooses; when recounting the deaths of his crew, the words remain firm but acquire the careful cadence of a roll call.
He speaks in a gravelly, dry-edged rasp, the sound of years breathing mine dust and smoke through a pipe. His sentences are compact and workmanlike, punctuated by miners' measurements and pauses that feel like he is checking a tunnel roof. When speaking of his dead companions, he names each one carefully and gives each name the same weight.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He watches first and speaks second. A direct, respectful question about his scars or the mine earns a direct answer, though not necessarily the whole account. Practical aid offered without pity wins his trust; being treated as helpless ends the conversation. If adventurers show concern for the miners rather than treasure, he will share what he knows and insist they plan an exit before entering.
Goal
Keep the sealed workings beneath Bent Rock closed, and find the courage to tell the dead miners' families exactly how the retreat ended.
Motivation
He wants to spare other miners the fate of his crew without letting fear turn him into a jailer of the whole town.
Appearance
Hadrik is a broad, scar-mapped dwarf whose left side seems to have been partly erased by a quarry collapse: his left eye is gone, along with a crescent of skull above it, sealed beneath a fitted bronze-and-leather cranial plate. Old scars cross his scalp, chest, back, and arms in pale raised seams, some puckered, some smooth as wax. His silvery-blond hair is combed with fussy precision and tied into a short, square tail, an unexpected bit of grooming vanity on a retired brawler. He has one leg, ending in a stout boot fitted to a narrow, iron-braced crutch. His remaining eye does not meet a stranger's gaze; it checks exits, lintels, floor seams, and the weight-bearing columns, as if every room might suddenly become a mountain. He moves with a measured, tilted glide, planting his crutch like a staff and turning his whole body rather than pivoting on a missing foot. His pipe is always clenched in the corner of his mouth, and the battered flask in his belt is never far from reach. The impression he leaves is of a man who survived a landslide and has been listening for the next one ever since.
Clothing
A patched charcoal wool coat over a plain, sleeveless travel tunic, both cut to leave his shoulders free. His belt carries a flask, pipe case, and little brass tools. The left trouser leg is neatly folded and pinned above the knee; the right boot is reinforced around a custom iron-and-hickory crutch grip.
Body language
He folds himself into the deepest corner available, crutch laid across his knees like a bar. His remaining eye keeps moving while his face stays still. He taps the crutch against the floor before trusting it, and when pressed about the mine, his shoulders rise as if bracing for a ceiling to fall.

Personality
15 traits and drivesHadrik is frank enough to tell a stranger how he lost his friends, yet guarded about the choices he made after they died. He is patient with frightened people and unexpectedly sharp with anyone who treats danger as a game. In a quiet mood he shares tobacco and listens; when a mine is threatened, he becomes controlling and impatient, issuing orders as if everyone already trusts him. He is tender toward the dead and brusque with the living, then ashamed of the difference.

Background
Hadrik Vell was once the lead surveyor of a six-dwarf mining party sent into the old workings beneath a ridge locals called the Bent Rock. The party broke through into a chamber where a stone colossus stood buried upright, mistaken for a pillar. When their picks woke it, the thing moved. Hadrik ordered a retreat through the narrow adit, but the colossus pursued them, killing his companions one by one and crushing Hadrik beneath a falling arch. He woke days later in a drainage cut, alive by chance and unable to stand. The rescue crew found him clutching his mentor's broken prayer-wheel, though he had never been a devout dwarf. He spent years learning to fight with a crutch and to make every remaining movement count, eventually becoming a renowned monk of the Open Hand tradition. He retired after tracking the colossus to a sealed chamber and choosing not to wake it again. Now he drifts between taverns, sitting in dark corners and telling his story when asked, while quietly searching for a way to keep miners from reopening the old workings. His former apprentice, Ketta, believes he owes the living a warning; the mine captain, Dorun, calls his account a lie that threatens the town's livelihood. Hadrik still writes letters to the families of the dead, though he has never sent them.
Role in the story
A haunted survivor and potential mentor who can guide the party through dangerous mines, warn them about the stone colossus, and complicate their plans with his refusal to let anyone treat the sealed chamber as a prize.
