Appearance
Elena Callow is a striking human woman in her early fifties with severe aristocratic features, fine lines gathered sharply at the corners of her mouth, and piercing steel-gray eyes that seem to weigh every person as an asset or liability. Her iron-gray hair is drawn into a severe geometrical knot secured by pale bone pins cut into tiny scales. She moves with unnerving economy, favoring her left side as though every turn has been plotted on an invisible grid. Her hands remain almost perfectly still until she writes, at which point her quill moves with startling speed. The unexpected contradiction is her warmth of expression when speaking to frightened children, whose names she remembers with disarming tenderness. Most adults leave her presence feeling as if they have been carefully inventoried.
“Her voice is low, dry, and perfectly enunciated, with the measured cadence of someone reading a verdict aloud. She pauses before crucial nouns, making titles and names feel like charges.”

Distinguishing Features
A silver quill with a cracked black reservoir, polished completely smooth where her thumb rests.
Bone hairpins carved into tiny interlocking scales.
A faint smell of dust, sealing wax, and wintergreen clings to her robes.
She favors her left side while walking, yet pivots sharply from the right when surprised.
Her lower lip bears a tiny vertical indentation from years of holding quills between her teeth while reading.
Voice
“A low, controlled contralto with a dry rasp beneath it, as if every word has been dragged across parchment. In moments of genuine affection, the severity leaves her voice and she sounds almost young.”
Clothing
A plain robe of heavy slate-gray wool lies beneath a rigid dark lacquered scale vest. The vest is made from overlapping metal plates etched with tiny contract clauses and fastened at the throat by a black iron clasp. Her cuffs are reinforced with thin silver mesh, and the soles of her boots are marked with chalk-white warding lines. Nothing is ornamental except her battered silver quill, whose grip has been polished smooth by decades of use.
Body Language
Elena stands with her weight subtly shifted onto her left leg, shoulders squared, chin slightly lowered, and hands folded over the head of her silver quill. She rarely gestures broadly. Instead, she tilts the quill by a few degrees, turns one finger inward, or angles her head to make others feel that they have already conceded something.
