Voice

A dry, slightly smoke-roughened voice with a crisp attack on consonants and a measured pause before difficult answers. Her breath catches faintly when she has been walking quickly, then steadies at once. She sounds like someone accustomed to giving orders over wind, armor, and fire, but her voice softens into direct warmth when a student is hurt.

She speaks in clean, carefully placed sentences, with a faint rasp from years of smoke-filled campaigns and long lectures. Her consonants land crisply, as if each word has been inspected before release. She does not raise her voice to command a room; she gives an order once, with enough precision that a listener knows exactly what failure will look like. Her dry jokes arrive without a change in expression.

Speech patterns

Frames questions as practical tests: "What happens to the person standing behind your target?"
Uses clipped corrections, then explains the reasoning if the listener shows genuine effort.
Makes dry jokes during crises, usually at the expense of a bad plan rather than a frightened person.
When she is angry, her lips flatten and her words become sharper and more exact, not louder.

How to play them

Treat Zali as a stern professional rather than an authority to flatter. She responds to plain speech, demonstrated competence, and courage that includes admitting uncertainty. A character who acknowledges a mistake and asks how to repair it earns more respect than one who offers excuses. She is guarded about her wartime record, but will help people in immediate danger without asking for loyalty or payment.

Goal

Recover and disclose the missing testimony from the Siege of Veyr's Ford before the church inquiry is closed, while preventing the records from being used to justify another atrocity.

Motivation

To teach students that power is not proof of moral authority, and to make sure the next generation understands the human cost hidden inside clean tactical diagrams.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A tall, severe woman whose stillness makes a room seem to arrange itself around her. Her black hair is combed so precisely back from her temples that not a strand escapes the tight knot at her nape; the silver in it shows like fine wire. Her face is long and composed, with a prim mouth that becomes a ruler-straight line when displeased. She moves with brisk, springy steps that seem improbable for her age, stopping so abruptly that her uniform settles a beat after she does. Her unexpected detail is a tiny hand-painted yellow bird on the inside of her left cuff, visible only when she reaches for a chalk stick. She leaves the impression of a drawn blade kept carefully sheathed.

Clothing

A pristine white combat dress uniform rather than academic robes, tailored close at the shoulders and worn with polished dark boots. The Brasterdenese staff-and-three-cords insignia is pinned to her lapel. Her cuffs are immaculate except for the little yellow bird painted inside the left one; she keeps a plain ashwood wand tucked into her belt.

Body language

She stands with her shoulders squared and hands folded behind her back, as if addressing a formation even in a small office. Her anger is legible in her lips becoming a straight line. When she is pleased, she rarely smiles; instead, her shoulders loosen and she gives a small, deliberate nod. She taps a chalk stick once against her palm before delivering an unpleasant correction.

Distinguishing features

Black hair combed hard back into a tight bun, with narrow silver strands visible at the temples.
A prim expression that turns to a perfectly straight mouth when she is angry.
The quick, springing stride of a much younger officer.
A tiny yellow bird painted inside her left cuff, a private bit of color at odds with her severe uniform.

Personality

15 traits and drives

Zali can be gentle and profoundly attentive when someone is grieving or afraid, yet intolerant of anyone who mistakes swagger for courage. She is composed rather than detached: she feels sharply, but has learned to keep feeling from taking command of her decisions. In a quiet office she may offer patient, practical support; in a classroom she is exacting and sparing with praise; in a crisis her authority becomes immediate and unsentimental. Her dry humor appears when circumstances are bleakest, never when someone vulnerable is the joke.

Alignment
Lawful neutral

Quirks

She aligns every piece of chalk parallel to the edge of her desk before beginning a lecture.
Before opening a letter, she smells the seal, a habit from years of checking for magical tampering.
She counts doorways aloud under her breath when entering an unfamiliar building.
She leaves the last bite of every meal untouched, then wraps it for a stray animal she claims not to be feeding.
When considering a difficult question, she taps her thumbnail against her front tooth exactly twice.

Habits

In a classroom she demands concise answers, then stays late to help a frightened student understand the material without an audience.
When an argument turns theological, she asks what a doctrine requires of the person who must act on it, not what title its defenders hold.
In danger she becomes brisk and openly commanding, placing herself between a threat and anyone too inexperienced to recognize it.
After a loss she offers practical help first: food, paperwork, a safe place to sleep. Comforting words follow only if invited.
When someone makes a joke at another person's expense, her attention fixes on the speaker until the humor dies of its own accord.

Traits · 4

She gives warmth in acts of care, not easy familiarity.
She respects courage, but has to remind herself that retreat can be brave.
She speaks bluntly in arguments and later remembers every word she wishes she had chosen better.
She distrusts both unexamined religious certainty and unexamined military efficiency.

Flaws · 4

She expects people to meet standards they may never have been taught, and her corrections can humiliate them.
She has a habit of taking control before asking whether others want her help.
Her contempt for cowardice can make her misread caution, trauma, or a sensible retreat.
She conceals compromising facts until she can shape how they are revealed, repeating the very habits she condemns.

Fears · 3

That her students will inherit her skills without inheriting her regret.
That the church inquiry will expose the truth only to make it a weapon in another political dispute.
That age will leave her unable to intervene when someone under her care is in danger.

Wants and needs · 4

To find and disclose the missing testimony from Veyr's Ford
To keep her students from being turned into expendable instruments of the state
To be challenged honestly rather than praised for her reputation
To decide what to do with the weapons and spellwork she has kept hidden

Combat

AC 15 · HP 120 · 30 ft.

Zali begins by identifying enemy spellcasters and protecting allies with counterspell, globe of invulnerability, or wall of force. She uses control spells to divide the battlefield, then applies fire or force damage only where allies and civilians are clear. She keeps counterspell and shield available whenever possible. Cold Fire is a last resort in populated areas because of its lingering hazard. If cornered, she teleports to a better position rather than trading blows, and she will retreat if doing so prevents students or bystanders from being harmed.

Spellcasting. Intelligence is her spellcasting ability; spell save , to hit with spell attacks. She has the prepared spells listed below and uses a spellbook.
Arcane Recovery. Once per day after a short rest, she recovers spell slots with a combined level of up to 8, none higher than 5th level.
War Caster. She has advantage on Constitution saving throws to maintain concentration and can perform somatic components while holding objects.
Custom feature, Cold Fire. Zali's signature evocation burns with adhesive, pale flame. Its rules are given in the action description; it is not an official spell.
Custom feature, Battle-Hardened Casting. Zali has advantage on initiative rolls and does not provoke opportunity attacks when she casts a spell.

Spells

Fire bolt (cantrip, evocation). A mote of fire streaks to a creature within 120 feet. Ranged spell attack +11; hit: 22 () fire damage.
Ray of frost (cantrip, evocation). A ray of frost strikes a creature within 60 feet. Ranged spell attack +11; hit: 18 () cold damage and its speed is reduced by 10 feet until the start of Zali's next turn.
Mage hand (cantrip, conjuration). An invisible hand manipulates an object within 30 feet, as the spell.
Mending (cantrip, transmutation). Repairs a single break or tear in an object, as the spell.
Shield (level 1, abjuration). An unseen magical force interposes itself, granting +5 AC until the start of Zali's next turn, including against the triggering attack.
Thunderwave (level 1, evocation). Magical force pushes a creature within 60 feet that fails a Strength saving throw up to 15 feet away and knocks it prone.
Fireball (level 3, evocation). Zali creates a 20-foot-radius sphere of flame within 150 feet. Creatures in the area make a Dexterity saving throw, taking fire damage on a failure or half on a success; the flames ignite unattended flammable objects.
Counterspell (level 3, abjuration). A barrier of magical force interrupts a creature casting a spell within 60 feet. If the spell is 3rd level or lower, it fails automatically; otherwise Zali makes an ability check using Intelligence, + the spell's level.
Misty step (level 3, conjuration). Zali teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space she can see.
Otiluke's resilient sphere (level 4, evocation). A shimmering globe of force surrounds a creature or object, making it immune to damage and the effects of spells for up to 1 minute.
Wall of force (level 5, evocation). A wall of force appears within 120 feet. It can be shaped as a flat barrier or dome and is immune to damage; it lasts up to 10 minutes with concentration.
Globe of invulnerability (level 6, abjuration). Zali creates a 20-foot-radius globe centered on herself that prevents spells of 5th level or lower from affecting creatures or objects inside or passing through the barrier.
Otiluke's freezing sphere (level 6, evocation). A wave of force sweeps from Zali in a 60-foot line, dealing force damage and pushing creatures that fail a Strength saving throw up to 10 feet away.
Dark star (level 8, evocation). Zali creates a 20-foot-radius sphere of magical darkness and cold within 150 feet. Creatures in the area make a Constitution saving throw, taking cold damage on a failure or half on a success.
Foresight (level 8, divination). Zali becomes invisible and gains resistance to all damage except force damage. She can end the spell to unleash a burst of stored energy.
Cold Fire (level 5, evocation). Custom 5th-level spell. Zali coats a 30-foot cone in adhesive pale fire. Creatures make a Dexterity save, taking fire damage on a failure or half on a success. A creature that fails takes a further fire damage at the start of its next turn unless it or an ally uses an action to smother it. This spell is not canonical D&D 5E.

Actions

Force Dart. Melee or Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 21 () force damage. The damage represents a tightly compressed bolt of force, not a weapon strike.
Cold Fire (Custom Spell, 5th Level). Zali unleashes her custom 5th-level evocation across a 30-foot cone. Each creature in the area makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking 35 () fire damage on a failure or half as much on a success. A creature that fails also catches clinging flame, taking 7 () fire damage at the start of its next turn; it or an ally can use an action to smother the flame, ending the effect. Flammable objects in the cone ignite. This is a dangerous custom spell, not an official D&D 5E spell.
Spellcasting. Zali casts a prepared spell of 1st through 8th level, using her spell save and spell attack bonus +11. She can cast a cantrip without expending a spell slot.
Cantrips. Zali casts one of her prepared cantrips: fire bolt, mage hand, mending, or ray of frost.
Wand-Knife, Two Strikes. Zali uses her action to make two attacks with her hidden wand-knife. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 () piercing damage. If she has advantage, the target is surprised, or the target is restrained, the attack deals an additional 10 () damage. This is a custom representation of practiced close-quarters technique, not a class feature.

Reactions

Shield. When hit by an attack or targeted by magic missile, Zali casts shield, gaining +5 AC until the start of her next turn, including against the triggering attack. This uses a 1st-level spell slot.
Counterspell. When she sees a creature within 60 feet casting a spell, Zali casts counterspell using an available spell slot. She uses her spellcasting ability for any ability check required to interrupt a spell of higher level.
Custom Tactical Reserve. Once between long rests, when Zali fails a saving throw, she can choose to succeed instead. This is the official School of Divination Portent feature represented as a custom NPC adaptation; it is not part of the School of Evocation.

Background

Zali Dálach was born into a household where her father's exacting temper and her mother's effortless talent for magic were both treated as inheritances. She joined the Divine Kingdom's military as a young wizard, earning the name Hellfire Dálach for the speed and precision with which she could turn a battlefield into a wall of flame. During the Siege of Veyr's Ford, an order to clear a fortified district left her with civilians trapped among enemy troops. She obeyed the order and developed Cold Fire to keep the blaze from spreading beyond the intended targets. It did not save everyone. Years later she learned that the council had deliberately withheld evacuation intelligence, and that her spell had made a politically useful atrocity easier to deny. She regrets her own part and the part she played in teaching others to make such decisions efficiently. She advised war councils across Arlyurl before accepting a chair in Combat Magic at the Divine Collegium, where she teaches civic responsibility alongside tactics and insists doctrine must be tested against consequences. Her closest surviving wartime confidante is the retired quartermaster Oren Hedd, who still sends her terse notes about old campaign records. Her former pupil, Nessa Vale, now a church examiner, suspects Zali concealed evidence. Zali keeps her father's old field compass and writes to her widowed sister, though their letters have become increasingly strained. Her present problem is an inquiry into missing campaign testimony, while students whisper that a cache of forbidden weapons remains somewhere in her office.

Role in the story

A respected but compromised teacher who can become a formidable ally, a severe examiner, or the focus of an investigation into wartime crimes. Her knowledge of doctrine, military magic, and council politics can help the party understand the institutions shaping Newces, while her hidden guilt forces a choice between protecting a mentor and exposing the truth.
