Veyr Kest
Veyr Kest
At the table
Voice
A dry, lightly rasped voice with the grain of cold weather and years of speaking over wind. He clips sentence endings, speaks faster and more precisely when angry, and has the practiced projection of an oath-keeper used to being heard outdoors.
His voice is dry and lightly rasped, shaped by years of cold air, roadside dust, and long stretches spent speaking only when words mattered. He clips the ends of sentences like someone accustomed to giving instructions over wind and rain. Old phrases occasionally surface in his speech, but he explains them rather than using them as decoration. When furious, he speaks faster and more precisely, as if drafting a contract aloud.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat him as a wary ally, not a quest dispenser. He offers useful truths first and personal truths only when the characters show that they respect other people's choices. Direct coercion ends the conversation; a sincere admission of complicity can earn unusual candor.
Goal
Find and destroy the final page of his first covenant before a ruler uses it to bind the realm's oaths to his patron.
Motivation
He wants to prove that a pact can be made without turning need into ownership, and to make restitution for the first bargain's long shadow.
Appearance
Veyr looks like a weather-beaten man in his late fifties, narrow-shouldered but hard to move, with skin textured like old parchment over corded muscle. He advances in short, precise steps, favoring his left side as if forever making room for someone walking beside him. A thumb-sized wooden bird hangs from his belt; its beak is polished smooth from generations of nervous handling. The unexpected detail is that he carries a tiny, brightly painted spinning top and will set it going on a table during serious negotiations, watching it with the grave attention of a priest at an altar. His presence suggests a door that has been shut for centuries and has just begun to open.
Clothing
A layered travel coat of dark, salt-stained wool, mended with mismatched thread; a high linen collar; soft boots; and a belt crowded with practical pouches. His clothing is old but meticulously cared for, with no insignia or obvious sign of office.
Body language
He walks with short, deliberate steps and a slight favoring of his left side, as though preserving space for an absent companion. In conversation, he holds his hands still until a promise is discussed; then his thumb begins to rub the smooth beak of the wooden bird. Anger makes him plant both feet and meet the other person's gaze without blinking.

Background
Veyr was a village oath-keeper before anyone had a word for warlock. During a winter famine, he begged a presence beneath a ruined hill to keep his people alive. It answered, asking not for his soul but for the right to be remembered. Veyr agreed, and the presence taught him a handful of impossible words. The bargain saved the village, but gave the presence a foothold in the world. Centuries later, Veyr learned that other desperate people had copied his bargain, each believing they had discovered a different power. He has spent his long life tracing those scattered pacts, sometimes guiding their bearers, sometimes ending them. His formative change came when he destroyed the first sanctuary built in his name, after its priests began choosing victims to feed the power he had once petitioned. He still corresponds with Maura, a mortal historian who believes he is her great-grandfather, and with Tovik, a former apprentice who now runs a refuge for people escaping infernal and fey bargains. Veyr currently seeks the last page of his original covenant, stolen by a ruler who intends to make every oath in the realm answer to the entity beneath the hill.
Role in the story
A living remnant of the first warlock's bargain, Veyr can be a mentor, uneasy ally, or central moral complication. His search for the covenant's last page intersects with characters whose powers or promises have already drawn the notice of his patron.

- Faction
- No formal allegiance. He aids Tovik's refuge when its work protects people from coercive pacts, but refuses to command it.
