Appearance
Mara is a compact, weather-hardened woman with a broad, capable face and a slight forward lean from years spent reading ledgers by bad light. Her hands are square-fingered, scarred across the knuckles, and permanently darkened beneath the nails by ink and coal dust. She walks quickly but never wastes a step, turning corners as if she expects trouble to be waiting there. Her hair is braided close to the scalp on one side and left in a rough silver-black fall on the other, a style she adopted after losing part of her left ear in the first bell collapse. She looks like someone built to lift a gate beam, yet she wears a delicate blue glass bead at her throat and handles it with almost reverent care. Her presence leaves people with the uneasy impression that they have already confessed something.
“Low, clipped, and economical. Mara speaks in complete instructions, rarely uses contractions, and pauses before names that carry emotional weight.”

Distinguishing Features
The upper rim of her left ear is missing.
Her fingertips are permanently stained with blue-black ink.
A blue glass bead rests at her throat and warms when the underground bells ring.
She carries a ring of thirty-seven keys, though only twelve open anything still standing.
One of her front teeth is capped with a tiny disk of bell bronze.
Voice
“A dry contralto with a faint rasp, like a shovel dragged across stone. Her public voice carries cleanly across a square, while her private voice sounds tired and unexpectedly gentle.”
Clothing
A charcoal wool coat reinforced with leather at the elbows, a rust-red waist sash, heavy brown trousers, and mud-caked boots. She wears a brass reeve's badge pinned beneath her collar rather than displayed openly. A blue glass bead hangs at her throat on a cord made from Joren's old bell-rope.
Body Language
Mara keeps her shoulders squared and her hands occupied with a ledger, key ring, or folded cloth. When someone mentions her daughter, her left thumb presses hard against the blue glass bead at her throat. She rarely sits with her back to a wall and turns her head toward distant sounds before anyone else reacts.
