Marra Vey
Marra Vey
At the table
Voice
A dry contralto with a faint mountain accent, often softened by exhaustion. Her laugh is unexpectedly bright and youthful, but it disappears immediately when she realizes she has made one.
Low, quick, and precise. She speaks as if every sentence is a field note, then occasionally breaks into a raw whisper when discussing the drowned. Under stress, she uses old Georgian-influenced place names from her childhood instead of Common.

How to play them
Marra begins by offering practical value rather than trust. She shows the party a safe campsite, identifies edible plants, and provides a partial map before asking for help. She conceals her responsibility behind technical language and refers to the expedition as 'the old survey.' If treated with patience, she gradually reveals inconsistencies in her story. If threatened, she bargains with the journals. If the party threatens to expose her before the crisis is contained, she may confess, flee into the flooded forest, sacrifice herself to open a sealed passage, or betray the party's route to Sava Pell in exchange for a chance to reach the dungeon first.
Goal
Reach the exposed Weeping Root, repair or destroy the damaged seal, and prevent the rain intelligence from spreading beyond the Verdant Maw.
Motivation
Marra wants to save the rainforest's remaining settlements, but beneath that goal lies a desperate need to prove that her life can still produce something other than damage. She does not merely want absolution. She wants to make a choice that costs her something real.
Appearance
Marra is a lean, rain-hardened woman whose movements are economical, deliberate, and slightly too quick whenever she hears water moving beneath the ground. Her face is narrow and weathered, with a small scar cutting through her left eyebrow and a permanent crescent of ink beneath her right thumbnail. Her skin is freckled across the nose and cheeks like damp river stone. Her dark hair is chopped to jaw length, but the rain has drawn it into thin ropes that cling to her neck. She carries herself like someone accustomed to measuring distances with her body, always placing one boot exactly where the next will be safest. The unexpected contradiction is her hands: they are delicate, almost elegant, with carefully filed nails, despite years of mud, rope, and excavation.
Clothing
A patched green oilskin coat over a faded royal surveyor's vest, knee-high mud boots wrapped with waxed cord, fingerless gloves, a broad leather belt crowded with measuring tools, and a hood stiffened with thin strips of lacquered bamboo. Her coat is lined with pages torn from obsolete maps.
Body language
Marra leans toward maps and away from people. She taps her thumb against her forefinger while calculating distances, keeps one shoulder angled toward the nearest exit, and freezes completely whenever the rain suddenly stops. When lying, she becomes unusually still and presses her notebook flat against her chest.

Personality
20 traits and drivesMarra is brave when danger is immediate and evasive when consequences are distant. She is generous with supplies, careful with promises, and ruthless with information. Around frightened villagers, she becomes gentle and patient. Around officials, she turns formal and calculating. Around fellow survivors of the expedition, she is almost painfully attentive, anticipating their needs before they speak. She despises superstition when it blocks action, yet privately believes the rain has developed a memory of her. Her sleepless guilt makes her compulsively document everything, as though a perfect record could become a substitute for repentance. She wants forgiveness, but fears that receiving it would be another form of escape.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 feetMarra avoids direct combat and prioritizes escape, warning allies, and controlling movement. She uses flare arrows to mark targets or safe routes, takes cover behind trees or ruined masonry, and spends her first round assessing terrain. If cornered, she fights with her staff and uses Desperate Plea to create an opening. She will risk herself to save someone carrying the expedition journals, but may abandon the party if they announce an intention to expose her before the flood crisis is contained.

Background
Thirteen years ago, Marra Vey served as a royal surveyor in the eastern rainforest, assigned to chart old roads, mineral seams, and pre-imperial ruins for the crown. Her expedition discovered the Weeping Root, a dungeon buried beneath a colossal strangler fig. The team believed the ancient root-bound structure was a cistern or temple. Marra ordered a test shaft drilled through a sealed chamber, damaging the ancient seal that imprisoned the rain intelligence beneath the dungeon. The first consequence was subtle: rain fell for nine days without pause. The second was catastrophic. Rivers changed course, villages vanished beneath mud, and several members of the expedition were found alive but unable to remember their own names. The crown buried the report, blamed bandits, and awarded Marra a medal she never wears. She left royal service and has spent thirteen years mapping the flooded frontier, secretly tracking the spreading influence of the rain intelligence. Recent floods have begun erasing settlements entirely, and the exposed Weeping Root is now the only place where the damage might be reversed. Marra seeks the player characters because she believes they can reach the dungeon, confront its guardian, and repair or destroy the damaged seal. She provides maps, journals, rope routes, flood warnings, and practical survival knowledge. She is genuinely remorseful, brave in the field, and useful under pressure, but she has concealed her responsibility because confession would mean execution, civil war, or both.
