Rorix Puddlefrost
Rorix Puddlefrost
At the table
Voice
Rough-edged and clear, with a slightly rasping texture from years of shouting over steam and rushing water. His pace quickens when he is irritated, and his clipped instructions cut through noise when someone is in danger.
His voice has a dry, slightly rasping edge, shaped by years of calling over bathhouse steam, street noise, and rushing water. He clips technical words cleanly and tends to stack practical questions one after another. When irritated, his pace accelerates and his consonants sharpen; when frightened for someone else, he speaks in short, unmistakable instructions.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He is brisk with people who waste time but generous with anyone who asks practical questions or shows concern for bystanders. Offer evidence about the well frost, a way to protect the district, or a sincere apology for a past wrong, and he becomes a committed ally. Do not demand trust as a substitute for earning it.
Goal
Find the source of the unnatural frost beneath the river district before it contaminates the wells or triggers another civic disaster.
Motivation
He wants to prevent preventable tragedies, but also needs to prove to himself that surviving the floodgate disaster meant something beyond luck.
Appearance
Rorix looks like a man who has spent years bracing against sudden weather. He leans forward slightly even when standing still, then moves in quick, careful bursts, as if stepping around puddles only he can see. His face is broad and weather-creased, with a blunt nose and eyebrows that rise sharply when he is doing mental arithmetic. His dark hair is cut unevenly at the nape and usually damp from the mist that clings to his coat. His most unexpected detail is a tidy row of tiny, carefully painted yellow ducks along the hem of his battle-worn wizard's robe. He claims they are warding sigils; they look unmistakably like ducks.
Clothing
A dark blue wool robe reinforced at the elbows with mismatched brown leather patches, worn over practical trousers and mud-scuffed boots. Its hem is repaired with blue thread and lined with tiny yellow duck motifs. One brass clasp is polished until it shines; the rest of his buckles are tarnished. His sleeves are deliberately short so they cannot drag through liquid or catch on a spell component pouch.
Body language
He plants his feet as if on a slippery bank and keeps one hand near the brass whistle at his collar. When explaining an idea, he draws invisible diagrams in the air with two fingers. If someone mentions a flood or trapped civilians, the humor leaves his face and he squares his shoulders.

AC 16 · HP 44 · 30 ft.Rorix begins by assessing exits, allies, and nearby hazards. He uses Mage Armor before an expected fight when possible, then opens with area control or a spell suited to enemy positioning. He avoids placing allies in the blast radius of Fireball or Lightning Bolt, relying on Web, Wall of Fire, and Counterspell to divide threats and protect vulnerable companions. He uses Misty Step to escape grapples or reposition, and reserves Puddlefrost's Reversal for a saving throw that would endanger an ally or ruin a critical plan.

Background
Rorix Puddlefrost grew up in a flood-prone river district, where his mother repaired locks and his father kept a public bathhouse warm through winter. He learned early that water could be a comfort, a weapon, and a record of what a town had failed to protect. At twenty, while apprenticed to a municipal arcanist, he was ordered to hold a failing floodgate shut with magic while officials evacuated their own homes first. He disobeyed, redirected the gate's pressure into an empty canal, and saved a crowded tenement, but the surge destroyed the archive where he had been studying. The experience made him suspicious of authority and fiercely protective of people trapped beneath it. He now earns his living as a freelance spellcaster and occasional instructor, taking dangerous jobs that involve creatures, unstable magic, or civic disasters. He sends part of every fee to his mother, Nima, and writes regularly to his former apprentice, Tavi, who is studying at a distant academy and believes Rorix should stop taking suicidal contracts. He is currently trying to discover why patches of unnatural frost keep forming in warm wells beneath the river district. His investigation has put him at odds with the district's watermaster, who insists the problem is harmless.
Role in the story
A formidable but approachable spellcaster who can become an ally, a source of magical expertise, or a volatile complication when the party investigates the failing wells. His concealed part in the old floodgate disaster makes him personally invested in any threat beneath the district.
