The Ashes Must Speak
The Ashes Must Speak
Read aloud
Mara Vey places a sealed clay urn on the table, and ash leaks from its cracks despite the lack of heat. She says the abandoned temple was not deserted because its god failed, but because its priests left a crime behind. If you enter the temple, find the missing records and learn whether the thing beneath the altar is truly a monster.

Cheat sheet
Objectives
- 1Find the missing liturgical records and identify what the old priesthood concealed.
- 2Expose who benefited from the abandoned temple's sacrificial rites.
- 3Resolve the conflict between regional safety and justice for the bound dead.
- 4Secure a relic that can calm the spirit or strengthen a replacement seal.Optional
The clock
The primary quest's seal restoration is scheduled to begin within three days. Each day, the temple's geography becomes less stable, the liturgical records deteriorate, and Monster 2 grows stronger. If the party delays too long, the old seal may activate automatically when the region's next memory storm begins.

The hook
Set the scene
Mara Vey meets the party in a smoke-darkened shrine outside the Vale of Reeds. She explains that every surviving account of the temple's abandonment contradicts the others, and that families connected to the old priesthood now suppress anyone who asks questions. She offers a map that shows three different routes to the temple, each accurate on a different day. Before the party leaves, ash forms the name ILYRA across the shrine floor, then scatters.
How Mara Vey asks
Mara Vey approaches the party after hearing that they intend to investigate or restore the abandoned temple.
She tests whether they care about the truth by asking them to name one person who benefits when history is incomplete. If they answer sincerely, she offers the clay urn, the shifting map, and a partial list of erased family names.

1. The Ashes in the Urn
A smoke-darkened roadside shrine at the edge of the Vale of Reeds.
Mara Vey presents the clay urn, the shifting map, and the first erased names. The party must decide whether to accept the mission and identify a route that changes according to memory rather than distance.
NextThe chosen route leads into the region's shifting landscape, where the party encounters a place that should not exist on any map.

2. The Village That Was Erased
A village square that changes architecture whenever someone tells a false version of the temple's history.
The party investigates a displaced village square containing descendants of sacrificed families. They can use social leverage, genealogy, stolen documents, or careful questioning to identify which families benefited from the temple's old rites. Brother Caldus appears and remembers only fragments, including the sound of a woman singing beneath the altar.
NextA descendant provides a hidden route into the temple through an abandoned water channel, while a messenger warns that Rusk's wardens are searching for the same evidence.

3. The Archive of Unnames
The abandoned temple's archive wing, where censers swing without wind and corridors rearrange around spoken names.
The party enters the temple through stealth, negotiation, or force. They bypass or confront the Censerbound Custodian and recover the liturgical records from the archive. The records reveal that the temple's sacrifices were selected from specific local bloodlines and that the final rite named Ilyra Orra as the vessel of containment.
The Archive GuardianNextThe recovered records cause the temple to awaken. A sealed stairway opens beneath the altar, and Monster 2 begins breaking through the lower containment chambers.

4. The Penitent Without a Name
A subterranean cistern where water flows uphill and the geography shifts with every broken containment mark.
The party descends into the cistern and confronts the Unmoored Penitent. They can fight it, calm it by restoring names, stealth past it while repairing a ward, or learn from its memories. Its fragmented visions show that the Ashen Saint has been holding back a larger collapse for centuries.
The Failed ContainmentNextThe creature's memories reveal a hidden passage to the broken altar and show that Magistrate Rusk's agents are approaching from above.

5. The Hearing at the Broken Altar
The roofless nave and broken altar, where contradictory visions display the temple's competing histories.
At the broken altar, Rusk demands the records and insists that the old seal must be completed. The party can expose him with evidence, turn his agents against him, bargain for access to Orra's Bell, or fight while the temple's geometry collapses. Rusk reveals that his family has guarded the lie because the region's prosperity depends on the seal's current design.
The Hearing at the Broken AltarNextWith Rusk defeated, persuaded, or exposed, the party reaches the seal chamber and must decide the fate of Ilyra and the bound dead.

6. The Saint's Chain
The seal chamber beneath the temple, filled with ash, bells, names, and overlapping versions of the same room.
The party chooses preservation, renewal, or release. Completing the old seal keeps the region stable but condemns the Ashen Saint. A new voluntary pact can contain the force while acknowledging the dead. Breaking the seal can free Ilyra and the accumulated memories, but the party must guide the release or face a dangerous supernatural storm.
NextThe region settles into its new reality, but the consequences become the basis for future adventures.
Behind it
What people believe
The abandoned Temple of Saint Orra was once the region's spiritual center, but it was deserted after a catastrophic ritual failure.
The party is asked to recover the temple's missing liturgical records and determine what truly happened before the old seal is restored. The records may reveal that the being beneath the temple was not the monster described in local history, and the party will eventually have to choose between preserving the region's safety and correcting an ancient injustice.
Background
The abandoned Temple of Saint Orra once stood above the Vale of Reeds, where roads, memories, and even familiar landmarks change without warning.
The temple priesthood claimed that a sacred seal protected the region from a devouring spirit beneath the sanctuary. In truth, the priests maintained the seal by sacrificing selected villagers and erasing their names from the liturgical records. When the final rite failed, the temple was abandoned, the records vanished, and the bound consciousness below was branded as a monster. The primary quest asks the party to restore the old seal. This secondary quest asks them to discover who was sacrificed, expose the lie, and decide whether justice is worth releasing what the temple contained.
The stakes
If the party restores the old seal without investigating, the Vale of Reeds remains geographically stable but the bound consciousness and the memories of the sacrificed remain imprisoned.
If they break the seal recklessly, the region may lose roads, names, and settlements as the Ashen Saint's grief becomes a physical force. If they uncover the truth and create a new voluntary arrangement, the region can survive while the old sacrificial system ends.
Encounters
3The Archive Guardian
combat/stealth
A circular archive chamber lined with sealed niches, hanging bronze censers, unstable shelves, and floor tiles that change their symbols whenever someone speaks a forgotten name.
Foes
Monster 1: Censerbound Custodian
Ash-etched acolyte shades
ComplicationThe guardian recognizes the missing liturgical records as contraband and attempts to destroy them rather than allow them to leave the temple.
ScalingFor a smaller or weaker party, use only the Censerbound Custodian and reduce its ability to summon shades. For a larger or stronger party, add shifting corridors, two custodians, or a living descendant possessed by an acolyte shade.
The Failed Containment
combat/exploration
A broken subterranean cistern beneath the temple. Water flows uphill, stairways end at different elevations, and fragments of other places appear in the walls.
Foes
Monster 2: The Unmoored Penitent
Memory-warped temple remnants
ComplicationMonster 2 is not merely attacking. It is trying to reach the seal chamber, and every injury causes the surrounding geography to distort further.
ScalingFor a smaller or weaker party, allow the creature to be calmed by naming sacrificed victims or presenting a recovered record. For a larger or stronger party, give it multiple shifting forms and let it alter battlefield distances each round.
The Hearing at the Broken Altar
social/combat
The temple's roofless nave, where rain falls upward and the broken altar displays visions of contradictory histories.
Foes
Magistrate Elian Rusk's hired wardens
Magistrate Elian Rusk, if negotiations fail
ComplicationRusk's agents arrive with orders to confiscate the records. The party can fight, expose the magistrate publicly, convince the agents they were deceived, or use the shifting temple to make the agents doubt their own orders.
ScalingFor a smaller or less politically connected party, use fewer wardens and provide Brother Caldus as a credible witness. For a larger or more influential party, give Rusk forged evidence and several witnesses loyal to his family.
Cast
4Mara Vey, Keeper of Ashes
Questgiver
WantsQuestgiver. Wants the names and fate of the sacrificed villagers revealed, even if doing so threatens the region's current political order. She believes the bound spirit is dangerous but was made monstrous by generations of abuse.
“The temple did not fall silent. We were silenced. Find the records, and make the dead impossible to forget.”
Brother Caldus
Witness
WantsAlly and witness. A former temple acolyte who survived the abandonment. He knows that the seal required human offerings, but parts of his memory were deliberately removed.
“I remember the bells, but not the faces beneath them. Every time I try to speak, the road outside moves somewhere else.”
Magistrate Elian Rusk
Antagonist
WantsAntagonist. A respected regional magistrate whose family gained land, status, and control of the temple's surviving relics after the old lie was established. He wants the seal completed and the records destroyed.
“My family did not write those records, and my family did not choose the sacrifices. Some truths are best left buried beneath useful walls.”
The Ashen Saint
Wildcard
WantsWildcard. The bound spirit beneath the temple can reveal the truth, but it is unstable, vengeful, and capable of warping memory and geography. It may help the party only if they acknowledge the sacrificed dead.
“You call me a beast because the priests taught you no other word. Break my chain, and I will show you what they feared.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
Forbidden Liturgical Records, which grant leverage over the temple's surviving political allies and reveal related sites.
Orra's Bell, a sanctified relic that can calm bound spirits, expose false memories, or reinforce a voluntary seal.
Ash-Marked Token, allowing the bearer to recognize one altered road or erased name per day.
Dangerous Blessing of the Ashen Saint, granting resistance to memory manipulation and the ability to recall erased places, while occasionally causing painful borrowed memories.
On a win
The party recovers the records, establishes the truth of the sacrifices, and makes an informed resolution.
Full success occurs if they expose Rusk's family, preserve the names of the dead, and either create a voluntary new containment or free the Ashen Saint while preventing immediate regional collapse. Partial success occurs if the truth is revealed but the spirit remains bound, if the spirit is freed with severe geographic disruption, or if the party preserves the region while securing recognition for the sacrificed dead. Failure occurs if the records and witnesses are lost, the old lie survives, and the seal is completed without justice.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party fails to recover or preserve enough evidence to expose the old priesthood's sacrifices.
- The truth remains buried, Rusk controls the narrative, and the party must complete the primary quest without knowing that the seal condemns an innocent consciousness.
- The party breaks or destabilizes the seal without recovering the liturgical records or establishing a way to contain the spirit.
- The records are destroyed, but the Ashen Saint is partially freed. The region begins losing roads, names, and settlements from collective memory.
- The party openly confronts Rusk without securing witnesses, political leverage, or undeniable evidence.
- The party is blamed for desecrating the temple, and descendants of the sacrificed families are targeted by Rusk's allies.
Complications (d6)
- 1A familiar path loops back to the temple entrance, but one party member has lost a recent memory and an NPC now remembers them as an enemy.
- 2The liturgical records begin rewriting themselves, replacing the name of one sacrificed family with the name of a living local household.
- 3A patrol led by Magistrate Rusk arrives early and claims legal authority over all temple evidence.
- 4Monster 1 mistakes the party for escaped offerings and seals a chamber with a collapsing stone mechanism.
- 5Monster 2 breaches a containment ward, causing the floor plan and nearby exterior landscape to shift during the encounter.
- 6Brother Caldus remembers that one of the current party members is descended from a sacrificed family, but cannot recall which one.
