The Ashen Vale
The Ashen Vale occupies Cinderwatch Fort, an abandoned hill-fort overlooking the charcoal pits and iron-rich ravines west of Claymondge. Rough homes fill old barracks, towers, and vaulted storage chambers, while workshops crowd the outer wall. About 140 tieflings live here, bound together by exile, necessity, and suspicion. The settlement's greatest danger is not outside the walls. Each night, the eastern bastion exhales warm ash and whispers.
The Ashen Vale
A repaired fort where exiles build homes beneath a bastion that whispers after dark.
“The Ashen Vale is a hard-used refuge where every wall bears a repair and every resident knows who carried them through the last disaster. Blackened stone, patched roofs, red-lantern watchposts, and communal fires give the fort a stubborn warmth. Claymondge traders come under escort and leave quickly. At night, warm ash drifts from the sealed eastern bastion, while whispers beneath the stones make even the loudest households lower their voices.”

Geography
Culture
The Vale survives through mutual obligation. A person who eats from the communal fires owes labor, warning, or protection in return. Tieflings who favor assimilation with Claymondge call this necessary discipline, while independence-minded residents call it the first foundation of a nation. Both groups agree that no one should face the fort's dangers alone.
Music is practical, portable, and loud enough to drown out bad dreams. Residents favor hand drums, bone flutes, hammered rhythm, and recited family histories. Children paint their doorframes with red ash symbols for protection, though the new black marks appearing beside them are never discussed in public. Storytellers compete to give every refugee a place in the settlement's shared history.
History
Government
Claymondge's merchants are demanding a formal tax and exclusive purchasing rights in exchange for grain. Meret wants the agreement, Hadrik calls it economic surrender, and Sella claims the proposed contract contains a ritual clause hidden in its legal language.
Black fire-marks are appearing on children's doors after nights of whispers. Sella wants families moved from the eastern barracks, but doing so would overcrowd the west tower and expose the fort's weakest wall.
A group of residents is preparing wagons and secretly storing food outside the fort. Meret fears panic, Hadrik fears desertion, and Sella suspects the departing families have heard something the council has not.
Economy
Food, lamp oil, sound timber, and trustworthy news are scarce. The settlement can make tools and charcoal, but not enough grain to survive a closed road. Claymondge merchants exploit this weakness by demanding low prices for necessities and high prices for anything that might strengthen the refuge.
Defenses
A rotating force of former soldiers, hunters, smiths, and older youths trained in shield lines, crossbows, fire control, and emergency evacuation. Their loyalty is personal rather than institutional.
Law & Order
- crime Level
- Moderate and rising. Theft, smuggling, intimidation, and fights over trade are common, while disappearances connected to the eastern bastion remain officially unclassified.
- enforcement
- The Cinderwatch Guard handles serious violence and patrols the walls. Household elders settle ordinary disputes. Meret's clerks control access to communal stores, giving economic penalties more force than formal law.
- typical Punishment
- Restitution through labor, loss of salvage rights, public apology before the Ash Council, or temporary expulsion beyond the gate. Serious violence can result in confinement in the old powder magazine.
