Choking Bloom. Any creature starting its turn within 30ft of the tree must spend 1 Hope or take 1 Stress as psychic pollen fills their mind with static.
Titanic Roots. The area within 30ft of the tree is difficult terrain. Any creature that falls prone is immediately grappled by minor root tendrils.
Psychic Agony. While the Iron Stake is in its core, the Marrow-Yew cannot use Knowledge actions but deals 2 additional psychic damage on all attacks.

Spells

Hallucinatory Woods (level 3, illusion). The area around the tree looks like a safe village to those with low Instinct.

Actions

Grafting Vine (Strength). Melee Attack. Reach 30ft. On hit, deal 6 Physical damage and the target is Restrained. While Restrained, the target is being 'Grafted'. They take 2 Stress at the start of their turn as the vines attempt to merge with their skin.
Rib-Maw Snap (Strength). The tree pulls a Grafted or Grappled creature into its central ribcage. Deal 14 Physical damage. If this damage exceeds the Major Threshold, the target is Swallowed.
White-Needle Volley (Finesse). Ranged Attack. Burst 15ft within 60ft. Deal 5 Magic damage and targets are Vulnerable until the end of their next turn.

Reactions

Neural Spasm. When a creature deals Severe damage to the tree, it releases a psychic scream. All creatures within 20ft must make a Presence roll () or be Stunned.

Legendary Actions

Call of the Grave. Spend 1 Fear. All Grafted creatures are pulled 15ft closer to the trunk.
Bloom Explosion (costs 2 actions). Spend 2 Fear. The Choking Bloom thickens. For the next round, the aura deals 2 Stress instead of 1.

Notes for the game master

Daggerheart Combat: This monster is designed to use the Action Tracker to force players to manage Hope carefully due to Stress damage.
Interaction: Players can use an Action (Strength + Force DC 16) to try and pull the Iron Stake. Doing so twice removes it.

Tactics

  1. Opening

The Marrow-Yew uses Grafting Vines to snare the most mobile characters and pull them toward the difficult terrain of its roots.

  2. Mid-fight

It focuses on the Rib-Maw Snap to consume high-health targets, using the White-Needle Volley to keep ranged attackers distracted.

  3. End of the fight

Once the Iron Stake is touched, the tree becomes frantic, using its Neural Spasm reaction every time it takes damage.

  4. Retreat

The tree cannot flee. If the Iron Stake is removed, it stops attacking and begins to wither, offering a final telepathic thanks.

How it fights

Prioritize targets that use Fire damage first.
Drag targets into the Choking Bloom to drain their Hope/Stress.
Use vines to pull healers away from fallen allies.

Who it attacks first

Fire Users
Those near the Iron Stake
Low-Stress (high mental vulnerability) targets

Works well with

White-Needle Volley makes targets Vulnerable, making the Rib-Maw Snap almost certain to hit a Severe threshold.

How to beat it

Teleportation can break the Grafted condition.
Protection from psychic damage significantly reduces the threat of the Choking Bloom.

Ways to avoid a fight

Calming the psychic spirit with a high Presence/Instinct roll can delay its attacks for one round.
Sacrificing a significant magical item to the Rib-Maw might sate its 'hunger' temporarily.

Ecology

A towering yew tree with bark as white and smooth as polished bone. Its roots are not in the dirt but instead entwine a massive, fossilized ribcage of an ancient titan that sits half buried at the trunk base. The ribs function as a serrated maw. Translucent, ghost-white needles shed constantly, creating a shimmering, choking fog around its base.

Behavior

Stationary but highly reactive. It vibrates with a low-frequency hum of agony that can be felt in the teeth. It uses its vines to pull living creatures toward its central 'maw' to integrate their bio-matter into its aching structure.

How it lives

The Marrow-Yew is a freak of nature created when a dying psychic titan bled into the roots of an ancient tree. It does not eat for hunger, but to silence the psychic screaming of the iron stake driven through its core centuries ago.

Lair

The Marrow-Grove. The ground is a literal carpet of fine, white bone-dust and pale needles. The air is thick with the 'Choking Bloom' pollen.

Habitat
The heart of Rotskogen, a perpetual twilight forest where nothing else grows within a hundred yard radius of the tree.

Signs that it is near

A total absence of bird or insect noise
A fine layer of white, powdery ash on all nearby leaves
Persistent auditory hallucinations of a child crying
Compass needles spinning wildly toward the grove

Lore

Villagers of Nattveden speak of the tree that weeps white dust. Long ago, an inquisitor attempted to 'slay' the forest by driving an enchanted iron stake into its heart. Instead of dying, the forest's soul retreated into this single tree, which has been in a state of suspended, psychic torment ever since.

What drives it

To end its own agony by absorbing enough consciousness to block out the pain, or to be finally destroyed by someone strong enough to pull the stake.

After the fight

Once the Marrow-Yew is defeated or healed, the white pollen clears. Rotskogen begins to turn green again, but the titan's bones remain as a monument. Nattveden is safe, and the psychic screaming in the villagers' dreams finally ceases.
