Elara Thorne
Elara Thorne
At the table
Voice
High-pitched, strained, and breathless.
Her voice is a rapid-fire staccato, peppered with complex alchemical terminology and sudden, breathless pauses. She often finishes her own sentences with a whispered 'yes, exactly.'
Speech patterns
How to play them
She will attempt to bribe players first, then appeal to their 'higher calling' as heroes, and finally descend into weeping desperation if they refuse to help.
Goal
Capture the Marrow-Drift Beast alive and bring it back to her makeshift containment field.
Motivation
To capture and stabilize the Marrow-Drift Beast at any cost, believing it to be the only vessel containing her partner's soul.
Appearance
Elara is a vision of frantic intellect pushed to the brink of collapse. Her once-elegant High Elf features are sharp and haggard, with heavy dark circles beneath eyes that shimmer with an unnatural, shifting amber hue. She moves with a jerky, caffeinated energy, her hands perpetually stained with indigo and silver oxides. Despite her disheveled state, she carries an aura of immense, desperate authority, like a captain refusing to leave a sinking ship. A faint smell of ozone and burnt lavender follows her.
Clothing
Soot-stained silk robes of a scholar, now largely obscured by a heavy, multi-pocketed leather alchemist apron bursting with glass tubes and copper wiring.
Body language
Leaning forward aggressively, hands always hovering near her bandolier, eyes darting to any nearby movement.

Personality
13 traits and drivesElara is a study in contradictions: she possesses the cold, calculating mind of a master scientist but is currently driven by a raw, irrational grief. She is clinical and patronizing toward humanoids, viewing them as distracting biological machines, yet she speaks to the Marrow-Drift Beast with the tender, heartbreaking soft-spokenness of a lover. She is fiercely protective of her theories and will lie or manipulate without hesitation if she believes it serves her goal of 'reclaiming' her lost partner.

Background
Three years ago, Elara and her research partner (and secret lover) Malakor were conducting translocation experiments on the edge of the Marrow-Drift, a pocket of reality where the Ethereal Plane bleeds into the material. An explosion of 'Void-Salt' consumed Malakor, but rather than vanishing, his essence seemed to fuse with a local apex predator. Elara has spent every moment since crafting a serum to stabilize the beast's shifting form, convinced that if she can stop its physical degradation, she can eventually extract Malakor's soul.
Role in the story
The desperate quest-giver who provides the party with the tools (and the moral dilemma) to engage with a terrifying monster non-violently.
