Appearance
Jory Pell is a narrow, careful man who seems assembled from practical angles: long wrists, sloping shoulders, and a slight forward tilt as if listening through a wall. He moves with an economical half-step, always favoring his left side, and never quite walks in a straight line. Instead, he traces invisible curves around furniture, doorframes, and people, as though avoiding unseen coils stretched across the floor. His face is plain at first glance, but his expressions arrive in the wrong order. A smile may appear before he understands a joke, while concern sometimes reaches his eyes several heartbeats after his voice has become gentle. His skin has the dry, papery texture of someone who works around dust and old parchment. He smells faintly of lamp oil, rainwater, and cinnamon. The unexpected contradiction is his hands: despite his severe, clerical appearance, they are remarkably soft and warm, with nails buffed smooth like a musician's.
“Low, deliberate, and carefully paced. Jory speaks as if every sentence must fit into a ledger column.”

Distinguishing Features
He walks in shallow arcs rather than straight lines, as if navigating invisible tensioned cords.
His left thumb is permanently stained blue from Exchange cipher ink.
He carries a palm-sized brass spool that turns by itself whenever one of the voices speaks.
He smiles at machinery with more affection than he shows most people.
His shadow often seems to pause a fraction of a second after he stops moving.
Voice
“A soft baritone with a dry, administrative cadence. He sounds reassuring when speaking to the desperate and maddeningly courteous when avoiding a question. At times, a second rhythm seems to overlap his words, as if someone is silently finishing each sentence.”
Clothing
A charcoal waistcoat beneath a weatherproof brown coat, both reinforced with stitched channels of blue cord. He wears a faded Exchange sash wound twice around his torso, fingerless wool gloves, soft-soled boots, and a brass seal at his throat. Every pocket contains a different kind of knot.
Body Language
Jory keeps his elbows close and his feet angled toward the nearest exit. He tilts his head toward empty corners during pauses, presses two fingers against his wrist when the voices grow loud, and unconsciously traces circular patterns on tabletops. When someone powerless speaks, he leans forward and occupies less space. When confronted by an equal, he subtly retreats behind desks, shelves, or official language.
