Simba
Simba
At the table
Voice
A broad, chest-resonant voice with a dry rasp at the edges, shaped by years of dust, wind, and calling across open ground. It carries easily without sounding rehearsed. After long travel, a faint breathy roughness catches on certain consonants; his laugh is sudden and full-bodied.
His speech is direct and grounded in the practical rhythms of travel, hunting, and stewardship. He often starts with a joke or an image, then turns to a plain question that exposes the heart of the matter. He does not dress anger in courtesy: when furious, his words become blunt and specific, naming the harm and the person responsible.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Simba as approachable but not careless. He responds well to directness, practical compassion, and people who can admit uncertainty. A visitor who speaks only to the king will get formal courtesy; one who notices the burden on the communities around him may earn his candid attention. He will test a proposed alliance by asking who is most likely to be hurt if it fails.
Goal
Build a fair system for sharing water and grazing land before the next dry season turns old grievances into violence.
Motivation
To make the kingdom safe enough that people can disagree with their ruler and still expect justice.
Appearance
A tawny lionfolk with a thick, sun-roughened coat and a mane the color of burnt honey, darkening to umber at its heavy, uneven tips. His mane falls in dense ropes over his shoulders, caught in a few places with plain leather ties; the rest is wind-tangled and full of dry grass. His broad muzzle is dusted pale around the whisker roots, and his amber eyes keep sweeping exits, high ground, and the faces of anyone left out of a conversation. He walks with the loose, rolling balance of a big cat, but when he chooses to be kingly he plants his feet as though the earth has been waiting for him. An unexpected detail: he wears a tiny, carefully mended child's bead bracelet beneath one foreleg guard, absurdly small against his massive paw.
Clothing
A practical leather chest harness, weather-faded shoulder wrap, and bronze foreleg guards engraved with old royal sun marks. His garments are repaired rather than replaced, and he carries no crown while traveling.
Body language
His ears swivel toward every new voice, while his eyes keep returning to whoever has not spoken. He presses one paw briefly against the little bead bracelet when troubled, often without noticing. At ease he sprawls heavily and lets others fill the silence; when taking responsibility, he rises in one smooth movement and squares his shoulders.

Personality
13 traits and drivesSimba is generous with attention but uncomfortable receiving it; he can charm a tense crowd, then brood alone over a decision everyone else has accepted. He loves laughter and uses it to welcome people, yet becomes stubbornly solemn when someone is being ignored. In private he is restless and playful; in public he works hard to appear measured, though injustice can strip away that restraint in an instant.

He opens with a roar when it may break an enemy's nerve, then uses Pounce to knock down an isolated foe. He avoids lethal force when a surrender could prevent further bloodshed, but becomes relentless if someone threatens children or the water supply.

Possessions
Background
Simba was raised to inherit a sunlit kingdom where waterholes, migration paths, and old grazing rights mattered as much as the crown. As a cub, he mistook confidence for wisdom and once led a friend into a forbidden ravine to prove he could face danger. The resulting stampede injured a keeper and taught him that other lives pay for a prince's dares. Later, when a trusted relative seized power and drove him into exile, Simba survived among wanderers who taught him to laugh without pretending nothing hurt. A chance encounter with an old companion and the sight of his homeland withering forced him to return. He reclaimed the throne, but victory did not restore what had been lost: rain is unreliable, displaced families have returned with competing claims, and some subjects still remember the years when he was absent. He visits the outer wells himself, trying to rule as a caretaker rather than a symbol.
Role in the story
A powerful ally and complicated ruler whose return has ended a tyrant's reign but not healed the land. He can provide authority, knowledge, and muscle, while asking the party to help resolve the consequences of old bargains and present scarcity.
“As a cub, he mistook confidence for wisdom and once led a friend into a forbidden ravine to prove he could face danger.”
- Faction
- The restored Pride Lands court, though Simba insists his duty is to the people and land rather than the court itself.
