Outskirts
Recipe: Wilderness Encounter
The Grey Shroud of Oakhaven's Edge
The transition from the lush valleys of the interior to the 'Outskirts' is marked by a sudden, chilling silence. Here, the air turns heavy with volcanic soot, a fine grey powder that clings to clothes and clogs the throat. Tall, skeletal trees stand as silent sentinels in a landscape of rolling ash-dunes and jagged obsidian outcrops. The horizon is perpetually lost in a dense, sulfurous fog that smells of old smithies and forgotten graves. Survival in this fringe territory requires more than just steel; it requires an eye for the subtle shifts in the wind and the knowledge of where the earth is hollow. Abandoned supply wagons, half-buried in the shifting grit, serve as grim milestones for those foolish enough to stray from the few beaten paths. Somewhere in the gloom, a rhythmic scraping sound suggests that the local predators are not just hunting, but sharpening their claws against the very bedrock of the world.
Elara Vane, Border Scout
“In the Outskirts, you don't watch the horizon. You watch your own shadow. If it starts moving differently than you do, start running.”

The Ash-Fields

Low-Point
Low-Point is built directly into the lee of a giant petrified ribcage that curves hundreds of feet above the basin floor. The 'town' is a vertical sprawl of scrap-iron shanties and stone huts bolted to the bone. At its center stands the Air-Filtering Spire, a monolithic tower that supposedly cleans the salt from the air. The settlement exists only because of this spire; without it, the alkaline dust would kill a person in hours.

Cinder-Wing Wyvern
A territorial, soot-covered dragon that manipulates smoke and fog to hunt travelers in the charred outskirts.

The Buried Scriptorium
A slanted temple of learning partially swallowed by the ash-fields of the Outskirts. Grey silt spills through cracked ceilings, and the air is heavy with the smell of scorched parchment and ancient ozone.

The Scorched Hives
A network of vertical shafts and heat-warped tunnels carved into the glass-like obsidian of the Black Mesa. Magma trickles through cracks in the floor, illuminating the charred remains of those who dared cross the trade routes above.
