For three nights, the villages beneath the Old Hills have heard a funeral bell toll from beneath the earth. No bell hangs in any chapel, yet its voice rolls through the valleys after midnight, deep enough to shake dust from rafters and wake the dead in their sealed graves. Those who rise do not attack at once. They stand in the roads, clutching scraps of golden metal and whispering the same unfinished oath in voices packed with soil. The old stories say the hills were raised over a king who swore to guard the land until the last flame went dark. The elders call that story superstition, but one of them has come seeking outsiders before the next moonless night. Beneath the barrows, an ancient guardian stirs among cracked oath-stones, forgotten names, and a bell that does not merely summon the dead—it remembers every promise ever broken in De Gylleneåsarna. To end the haunting, the adventurers must decide whether the truth is worth more than the peace built upon its burial.

The Barrow Bell-Warden is the undead remnant of a guardian-jarl who willingly bound his soul beneath the Old Hills to preserve an ancient pact between the living, the dead, and the land. His descendants secretly broke the pact, looted the barrows, and blamed the resulting famine on outsiders. The Bell-Warden now tolls the cracked bell to awaken every betrayed dead soul in the hills. He is not merely evil. He is a sacred office that has been twisted by centuries of false testimony.

Beneath the Old Hills lies a buried complex of hill-fort stone, royal graves, and ritual chambers built around a black funeral bell. The dead have begun to rise as an ancient oath fails, spreading a curse across De Gylleneåsarna and calling something greater from beneath the land. The dungeon offers several routes to its deepest sanctum, but every shortcut demands a sacrifice, confession, or betrayal.

Haldor is practical, observant, and capable of genuine tenderness, but he treats morality like a wall that must be repaired with whatever stones are available. He is patient with frightened strangers and harsh with people who remind him of his own cowardice. In public he is steady, almost fatherly, giving orders in a low voice while others panic. In private he becomes restless and compulsive, rewriting names in his ledger until the ink blurs. When he believes the valley is in immediate danger, his compassion narrows into arithmetic. When angry she becomes theatrical, reciting old oaths as accusations. When grief-stricken she turns practical, cleaning weapons, sorting bones, and refusing to discuss feelings. She sincerely wants to save people, yet she is willing to endanger them if she believes their survival would preserve a greater lie.
