Contextual Narrative

The Bell Beneath the Drowned Saint

For three nights, the abandoned temple has rung beneath the hill. No bell hangs in its tower; the tower collapsed a century ago, and the shrine was sealed after an entire pilgrimage vanished without a trace. Yet the sound travels through stone, water, and bone. Villagers wake standing at their doors, their feet muddy, their mouths shaping a hymn none remembers learning. By dawn, they find ash beneath their fingernails and hear a second heartbeat beneath the earth. The temple’s outer halls are choked with reeds and floodwater, its saints’ faces worn smooth by rain and deliberate violence. Old prayers have been carved over older names, and every passage seems to lead somewhere different when the bell sounds. Something within the sanctum is awakening—but the thing behind the seal may be less monstrous than the people who built it. Those who seek the temple’s power claim they can save the region. Those who would destroy it may unleash the suffering that the old priests buried alive.

A half-erased inscription beneath the temple steps

“When the bell remembers your name, choose what must be saved—and who must pay.”

Key Personas

Sister Maelin Voss

Sister Maelin Voss

Maelin is compassionate in emergencies, stern during ordinary conversation, and almost cheerful when explaining medicinal techniques. She treats strangers more gently than people she loves because strangers cannot accuse her of past failures. With the village, she is protective to the point of manipulation. With Tessa Ruun, she becomes defensive and bitter. Alone, she is meticulous, frightened, and prone to rehearsing apologies she will never deliver. She wants forgiveness but distrusts anyone who offers it too easily.

Ilyra Venn, Last Novice of the First Mercy

Ilyra Venn, Last Novice of the First Mercy

Ilyra is tender toward strangers but suspicious of anyone who claims authority. She can be patient with frightened children and brutally impatient with priests, nobles, or scholars who use abstract language to excuse suffering. In calm moments she is observant, wry, and almost playful. Under pressure she becomes ritualistic, repeating old instructions as if obedience might restore the night before the catastrophe. When angry, she speaks with terrifying clarity. When grieving, she becomes generous with information but forgets to protect herself.

Ysra Pell

Ysra Pell

Ysra is patient with the frightened, severe with the arrogant, and unexpectedly gentle with children and animals. She can spend an hour cleaning a stranger's wound while refusing to forgive a colleague for a small betrayal. In public she is composed and persuasive, presenting every harsh choice as an unpleasant necessity. In private she becomes superstitious, touches Sella's ribbon, and whispers apologies to the dead. She wants to be merciful, but fears mercy is simply another name for hesitation.

Regional Effect

The Echoing Memory

The failing seal causes sound and memory to bleed through the landscape. Bells seem to ring from beneath the water, voices answer from empty chambers, and landmarks shift toward their remembered positions from the temple’s final night.

Mechanic

After each major bell toll, creatures in the region must succeed on a Wisdom save or become disoriented: they lose their reaction and have disadvantage on their next navigation, Investigation, or Insight check. Magical light and consecrated symbols suppress the effect briefly.

Quest Objectives

Enter the abandoned temple before the next major bell toll and determine what is causing the underground ringing.

The party reaches the buried bell chamber, learns that the seal is failing, and gains enough leverage to choose whether to reinforce, alter, or break the ancient containment ritual.
If the party delays, more villagers become sleepwalkers, the plague manifestation spreads through the marsh, and the temple guardian begins ringing the bell every night. On the seventh toll, the sealed sanctum opens without the party’s influence.

Recover the missing temple records and identify the people whose sacrifices powered the seal.

The party exposes the temple’s moral truth, allowing them to negotiate with the bound spirit, rally the region against the rival claimant, or reshape the ritual so the dead are acknowledged rather than consumed.
If the party accepts the old priesthood’s version of events without investigation, they may preserve the seal while condemning the bound witness and leaving the original injustice hidden. The rival claimant gains public support and begins a reckless ritual.

Decide who should control the temple’s relic: the village custodian, the bound witness, the rival claimant, or no one at all.

The party secures a chosen resolution and receives an appropriate reward, while the region’s future changes according to whether they favored safety, justice, power, or sacrifice.
If the party betrays or misjudges the rival claimant, the claimant may steal the relic and trigger a partial awakening. The region becomes divided between those demanding restoration and those demanding destruction.
