Barnaby 'The Wheel' Stout
Barnaby is an expert at the 'performative hospitality' of a tavern-keep. He is intensely jovial with strangers, greeting every traveler like a long-lost brother, yet he is secretly miserly and keeps a strict ledger of every copper owed by the locals. He suffers from a deep-seated insecurity regarding his retirement, causing him to embellish his past to maintain a sense of importance. While he argues bitterly with Elara the shopkeeper over the quality of their clientele, he is the first to secretly leave a bottle of fine wine on her doorstep when she has a slow week.

Elara of the High Path
Elara is a study in quiet intensity. She is deeply protective of the surrounding wilderness but has a clinical detachment from the travelers who traverse it. While she is ruthlessly efficient and impatient with 'city-folk' nonsense, she will spent hours meticulously repairing a stranger's pack for free if she sees they respect their gear. She harbors a profound, silent resentment for the kingdom she once served, viewing the crown's expansion as a blight, yet she maintains a professional mask that is colder than the mountain winds.
