Contextual Narrative

The Resonant Tides of Feather Falls

Feather Falls clings to the jagged limestone cliffs of the Silver Gorge like a collection of stubborn barnacles. The air here is a perpetual, shimmering haze of prismatic spray thrown up by the 'Grand Plunge'—a massive waterfall that drops five hundred feet into a bottomless basin. The constant roar of the water is a physical weight, a rhythmic thrum that residents call the 'Mountain's Heartbeat.' Architecture here is vertical, connected by precarious rope bridges and iron-reinforced lifts powered by massive waterwheels. Life in the Falls revolves around the harvest of Roc-kin down and the refining of 'Aura-Crystals' found in the wet caverns behind the curtain of water. Yet, lately, the roar has changed. The thunderous rhythm has developed a hitch, a discordant vibration that makes the glassware shatter and the town’s children speak in voices not their own. As the mist grows thicker and colder, the townspeople look toward the top of the falls with growing dread, wondering what—or who—has begun to dam the source of their lifeblood.

Garrick 'Three-Toes' Vane, Ferryman

Don't mind the vibration in your teeth, traveler. That's just the mountain reminding us we're guests. If it stops, that's when you should start running.

Settlement

Feather Falls

Feather Falls is built directly into the wet granite of the Silver Wash gorge. Houses are anchored by heavy iron chains and cantilevered over the white water. The roar of the falls is a constant physical pressure that residents have learned to ignore. Every street is a narrow walkway slick with moss and mineral deposits. Life here moves to the rhythmic thumping of the Great Wheel, a massive wooden engine that harvests the water's power.

The Sodden Boot

The deafening roar of the nearby waterfall makes normal speech impossible. Everyone must shout, and strangely, this creates a perfect environment for secret meetings as no one can eavesdrop from more than a foot away.

The Gossamer Wing

Elara constantly smooths her apron and avoids making eye contact, her gaze darting frequently toward a loose board near the back counter whenever a customer approaches the register.

The Pressure Valve

Krog constantly taps on the pipes in the shop and listens with a stethoscope, muttering about rhythmic irregularities and potential saboteurs from the lower docks.

The Drowned Eye

The shop is located directly behind a waterfall, yet it remains eerily silent and dry inside. Zeph, though blind, navigates the space with perfect precision by clicking his tongue and feeling the vibrations of the cascading water against the stone walls.

Quest Objectives

Investigate the 'Silent Weir' at the top of the falls to determine why the water flow has decreased by twenty percent.

The party clears a blockage caused by a nesting Crag-Hydra, restoring flow and earning the Council's favor.
The water flow drops further, causing the town's mechanical lifts to fail and isolating the lower districts.

Recover a shipment of refined Aura-Crystals stolen by 'The Damp-Stalkers,' a group of outcasts living in the caves behind the falls.

The crystals are returned, and the party uncovers that the outcasts are actually fleeing something deeper in the mountain.
The crystals are sold to a rival city, plunging Feather Falls into an economic depression and weakening its defenses.
