AI Dungeon Master Apps Compared: AI Realm, StoryRoll, and AIDungeonMaster.ai in 2026

Short answer: AI Realm is the most complete AI Game Master I tested, StoryRoll is the quickest free start, and AIDungeonMaster.ai is still waitlist-gated in October 2026. Three apps promise an AI Game Master that runs your D&D session solo or with friends. AI Realm and StoryRoll are live today, and both now publish real paid pricing, where they didn't in July 2026. None of them generate a reusable content library the way CharGen does, and CharGen does not narrate a session.

Content generator for GMs who prep before an AI (or human) runs the session.

What I built, so apply the appropriate scepticism. None of the three apps in this comparison are content generators, and CharGen isn't an AI Game Master. AI Realm, StoryRoll, and AIDungeonMaster.ai all narrate a live session: they read what you type and respond in character, turn by turn. CharGen does the opposite job. It generates NPCs, monsters, settlements, dungeons, factions, and loot tables as structured, reusable entities with AI portraits and VTT-ready tokens, then lets you carry that content into whichever AI Game Master, or human DM, you're actually playing with that week. If you want the AI to run the session, pick one of the other three. If you want a world's worth of prep to bring into that session, this is the tool.

What it does well

  • Generator types for NPCs, monsters, magic items, settlements, dungeons, factions, loot tables, and more, with the text generators free of gold (checked October 2026)
  • Every entity comes with an AI portrait, and the free Token Maker turns it into a VTT-ready token you keep, a step past a one-off in-session scene image
  • Linked world context: NPCs connect to settlements connect to regions, so prep stays consistent across sessions and apps
  • Content survives independently of any one AI Game Master: export it, screenshot it, or describe it to AI Realm, StoryRoll, or a live table

What it doesn't

  • Not an AI Game Master: no live narration, no turn-by-turn combat resolution
  • No live voice narration or multiplayer session hosting; CharGen's audio and video generation cost gold and make files, they do not run a session
  • Requires pairing with an AI GM app or a human DM to actually run a session

The most established AI Game Master, with 766K+ campaigns (October 2026) and deep memory tools.

AI Realm is the most mature of the three: live since 2023, with 766K+ campaigns created and a Discord community of 22K+ members by its homepage in October 2026 (200K+ campaigns and 10K+ members when I first checked). Its V2 update rebuilt long-term memory around a Notes system: NPC Cards, an interactive Character Sheet with animated dice, auto-updating Campaign Summaries, and GM Guides you write yourself to steer the AI. The big change since I last checked: AI Realm now publishes real pricing instead of gating it behind Google sign-in. Four paid tiers sit above a roughly 30-messages-a-day free plan: Bronze at $7.99/month, Platinum at $14.99/month, Emerald at $24.99/month, and Obsidian at $49.99/month, with multiplayer hosting starting at Platinum. Its homepage now lists 29 storytelling AI models (up from eight in August, including Gemini and ChatGPT) and three image generators for portraits and mid-campaign scene snapshots. The honest trade remains that the AI forgets anything not logged in Notes, by its own Player's Guide's admission.

Players who want the deepest campaign-memory tooling and the largest existing community of AI Game Master players.

StoryRoll

Free AI Game Master, live today, playable within about 60 seconds.

StoryRoll is the fastest of the three to actually get into a session: no waitlist, no credit card, and its own materials claim about 60 seconds from landing on the site to your first scene. Pick a theme (classic D&D fantasy, deep space sci-fi, a beginner-friendly enchanted fairy tale, or a new anime mode added since I last checked) and the AI Game Master narrates, runs combat with real initiative and ability checks, and voices NPCs out loud, while every character gets a portrait and every location gets illustrated as you explore. The free tier now bundles voice narration and 3D dice rolling rather than holding them back for a paid plan. The real change since July: StoryRoll now publishes actual pricing. Free gives you 6 AI turns a day; StoryRoll Plus at $9.99/month raises that to 30 turns a day (5x the free limit); a $2.99 Day Pass buys a 24-hour boost to 30 turns without a subscription. Multiplayer still works through a shared invite link with no extra per-player charge. StoryRoll is upfront about what it doesn't do: no tactical battlemaps, no grid-based combat, and a smaller community than the more established AI Game Masters.

AIDungeonMaster.ai

5e-rules-first AI Dungeon Master with a creator marketplace, still gated behind a waitlist.

AIDungeonMaster.ai pitches itself on rules fidelity: full 5e combat with initiative, spells, conditions, and terrain tracked automatically, NPCs voiced individually, and a persistent memory the site says covers every NPC, plot twist, and promise across sessions. It's also building a two-sided Campaign Marketplace where creators publish adventures and keep 70% of what they sell. Its pricing page lists a free tier (one campaign, solo only, ten credits a day) plus paid Standard ($9/month) and Pro ($19/month) tiers that add guest players, monthly credits, and image and video generation. The catch, as of my research in July 2026 and again in October 2026, is that the whole product still sits behind an 'Apply for Early Access' waitlist. I could not create an account or play a session, so this entry is built from its public marketing and pricing pages rather than hands-on testing.

Best for

Players happy to join a waitlist for the most rules-faithful 5e combat tracking of the three, once it opens up.

If you're already playing in AI Realm or StoryRoll and want richer prep, the workflow takes about ten minutes. Generate the NPC, monster, or settlement you need in CharGen first, with its AI portrait and linked world context. Then describe it to your AI Game Master: paste the details into an AI Realm NPC Card or Custom world description, or introduce the character in your next StoryRoll message. Once AIDungeonMaster.ai opens up, the same approach applies to its Campaign Marketplace listings. Nothing about your existing campaign has to change. CharGen fills the reusable-content gap none of these apps address; it doesn't replace the AI Game Master doing the narrating.

StoryRoll is free to start, live today, and the fastest to actually start playing, with a cheaper $9.99/mo paid tier. AIDungeonMaster.ai promises the most rules-faithful 5e combat tracking but remains behind a waitlist as of October 2026. CharGen isn't an AI Game Master at all: it generates the NPCs, monsters, and settlements you bring into any of the three.

Not fully. As of October 2026, still confirmed on its homepage, it remains gated behind an 'Apply for Early Access' waitlist (over 10,000 signups so far), even though its pricing page lists a free tier plus Standard ($9/month) and Pro ($19/month) plans. I couldn't create an account to test it hands-on.

Do these AI Dungeon Master apps use real D&D 5e rules?

All three claim 5e-based mechanics. AI Realm builds on the D&D 5e SRD (2014). AIDungeonMaster.ai advertises full 5e combat with initiative, spells, conditions, and terrain. StoryRoll's fantasy theme uses 5e-style dice rolls, ability checks, and spell slots. None of them are licensed D&D products.

Yes. The AI narrates the scene; CharGen supplies the world it's narrating.
