Eigengrau's Generator Alternatives: 5 Tools I Use for D&D Prep in 2026

Eigengrau's Generator (eigengrausgenerator.com) writes towns, NPCs, and quest hooks as prose paragraphs you can read straight to the table, free with no signup. The gap is visuals and linkage: nothing it generates comes with a portrait or a map, and every entity stands alone. Here are the five tools I tested against it in July 2026.

CharGen

AI generators that pair narrative content with portraits, tokens, and linked entities.

What I built. CharGen covers the same ground as Eigengrau's Generator (NPCs, settlements, factions, quest-ready hooks) and adds two things it does not have: AI portraits alongside every entity, and links between them, so an NPC generated for a settlement stays tied to it. Eigengrau's read-aloud prose has a strong improvisational voice CharGen does not fully match, and it asks for nothing, no account, no credits. CharGen's free tier covers casual prep but runs on a daily credit budget rather than Eigengrau's unlimited rolls.

What it does well

  • AI portraits and tokens generated alongside every NPC and entity
  • Linked entities: NPCs connect to settlements, factions, and regions
  • Fourteen-plus entity types beyond towns and NPCs, including dungeons and magic items
  • Content saves to your workspace and exports, not locked to one browser tab

What it doesn't

  • Account required, Eigengrau's Generator needs no signup at all
  • Free credits run out on a busy prep session, Eigengrau's rolls do not
  • Prose voice is more utilitarian than Eigengrau's distinctive read-aloud style
Best for

DMs who want generated content that comes with visuals and stays linked across a campaign, not standalone text.

Eigengrau's Generator

Free browser tool that writes read-aloud towns, NPCs, and quest hooks.

Eigengrau's Generator (also known as Eigengrau's Essential Establishment Generator) starts with a town and branches out. Click a building and it writes the establishment in full prose. Click an NPC inside it and you get a name, a description, and a personality, all worded to be read straight to the table rather than parsed from a table roll. Standalone generators cover mercenaries, magic items, traps, and taverns. It is free, open source under the MIT licence with 880-plus stars on GitHub, and needs no account. A built-in Saves feature lets you track and revisit what you have generated in a session. The trade against CharGen is that everything stays text: no portraits, no maps, and nothing links outside the single town you started from.

Best for

DMs who want an NPC or a town explained in read-aloud prose in seconds, with zero setup.

Donjon

The broadest free table-generator catalogue, across the most systems.

Donjon is the older, wider tool next to Eigengrau's Generator. Where Eigengrau's branches one town into its buildings and people, Donjon rolls dozens of separate generators (dungeons, towns, world maps, names, NPCs, treasure, encounters) across old-school AD&D, 5e, and sci-fi systems. Output is a flat table roll rather than Eigengrau's connected prose, and nothing links between generators. For raw generator breadth and system coverage, Donjon still wins. For a town that reads like a paragraph rather than a list, Eigengrau's Generator is the better voice.

Kassoon

Free town generator with shops, rumours, and NPCs tied together.

Kassoon sits closest to Eigengrau's Generator in intent: both build a town and populate it. Kassoon's town generator links inhabitants, shops, and rumours, and its NPC generator adds physical descriptions and personalities. The output reads more like structured fields than Eigengrau's flowing prose, and there is no branching from an NPC into a deeper background the way Eigengrau's expandable entries work. A combat encounter builder scaled to party level is a generator Eigengrau's does not have at all.

Best for

DMs who want a town and its shops generated together with a bit more structure than free-flowing prose.

Watabou

Procedural city and settlement maps to pair with Eigengrau's prose.

Watabou's Medieval Fantasy City Generator and companion tools solve the one thing Eigengrau's Generator does not touch: a map. Feed Watabou a size and it draws a full city layout with districts and streets in its signature procedural line-art style, free and with no signup. It does not write a word of NPC or establishment text. The natural pairing is Eigengrau's Generator for the town's voice and Watabou for the shape of the streets, though that means keeping two tabs open rather than one integrated workflow.

Best for

DMs who are happy with Eigengrau's Generator's prose and want a matching city map to go with it.

    If

You want generated content that comes with portraits and stays linked across your campaign

    Use

    CharGen

CharGen's NPC, settlement, and faction outputs link together and include AI portraits, going further than Eigengrau's text-only prose.

    If

You want a town, its people, and a quest hook written as prose you can read straight to the table, for free, right now

    Use

    Eigengrau's Generator

    Use

    Donjon

Donjon covers more systems and more generator types than Eigengrau's Generator, at the cost of connected prose.

    If

You want a town and its shops generated together with a touch more structure

    Use

    Kassoon

Kassoon's town generator links NPCs, shops, and rumours, and adds a party-level combat encounter builder Eigengrau's does not have.

You are happy with Eigengrau's Generator's prose and just need a city map to go with it

    Use

    Watabou

Watabou's procedural city generator produces the map Eigengrau's Generator never draws, free and with no signup.

Switching from Eigengrau's Generator

How to switch in ten minutes.

If you have been leaning on Eigengrau's Generator for towns and NPCs and want content that carries a face and stays linked, the move takes one prep block. Run the NPC Generator in CharGen for the shopkeepers and locals from your last Eigengrau's town, set a role and a visual anchor, and CharGen returns a portrait and a personality hook. Tag it to a settlement and the link holds for the rest of the campaign. Eigengrau's Generator is still worth keeping open for the moments you want a fast, free paragraph with zero setup, particularly mid-session when a player wanders somewhere you had not prepped. Most DMs I have spoken to run both: Eigengrau's for the improvised beat, CharGen for the content they plan to keep.

FAQ

Common DM questions about this lineup.

Q01

What is the best free alternative to Eigengrau's Generator?

Kassoon is the closest free alternative for town-and-NPC generation, with shops and rumours linked to the settlement. Donjon covers more systems and generator types if breadth matters more than prose. For content with portraits and links across a full campaign, CharGen's free tier goes further than any of the text-only tools, though it requires an account.

Q02

Is Eigengrau's Generator still worth using alongside these alternatives?

Yes, especially mid-session. Eigengrau's Generator's prose is written to be read straight to the table with zero setup and no account, which makes it the fastest option when a player wanders off the map. Most DMs I have spoken to keep it open as a fallback even after adopting a tool like CharGen for planned prep.

Q03

Does anything generate visuals to go with Eigengrau's Generator's text?

Not directly. Eigengrau's Generator produces text only. Watabou's procedural city generator produces a free map you can pair with an Eigengrau's town, though the two do not link automatically. CharGen is the only tool in this comparison that generates a portrait alongside the NPC text in the same pass.

Q04

Which of these tools works without an account?

Eigengrau's Generator, Donjon, Kassoon, and Watabou all work with no signup and no account. CharGen requires a free account to save gold-based credits and generated content to a workspace.

Q05

Can I export or save what Eigengrau's Generator produces?

Eigengrau's Generator has a built-in Saves feature that tracks and lets you revisit content within your session, but it is not built for export to other campaign tools. If you need generated NPCs and settlements to save to a workspace and export elsewhere, CharGen is the tool in this comparison built for that.

Q06

Is Eigengrau's Generator open source?

Yes. Eigengrau's Essential Establishment Generator is MIT licensed and hosted on GitHub with over 880 stars, built with Twine and SugarCube. Development is supported through optional Patreon and Ko-fi donations rather than a required subscription.
