Grimy Seaside Port

Contextual Narrative

The Salt-Choked Maw

The stench of rotting kelp and brine precedes the sight of Blackbrine Bay. Here, the port clings to jagged, soot-stained cliffs like barnacles to a foundering ship's hull. The wooden walkways, slick with green algae and fish guts, groan under the weight of smugglers and desperate sailors who call this damp purgatory home. Above, the sky is a permanent slate grey, bruised by the smoke of cheap coal fires and the spray of a restless, angry sea. Lanterns encased in thick, salt-crusted glass cast a sickly yellow glow over the mud-caked streets, illuminating figures huddled in doorways clutching rusted shivs. There is no law here that cannot be bought with a silver coin or a bottle of rotgut rum. Every creak of the timber is a warning, and every splash in the dark water below suggests something heavier than a fish has just been 'settled' by the local gangs.

Silas 'Salty' Vance, local deckhand

In this town, the only thing deeper than the sea is the pocket you need to grease to get out of it.

Blackbrine Bay
Settlement

Blackbrine Bay

Blackbrine Bay is carved directly into dark basalt cliffs. It is divided into three distinct tiers. The Muck sits at the water line, home to the docks and those who smell of brine. The Midriff occupies the central slopes, housing the markets and artisan guilds. At the summit sits The Crow's Nest, where corrupt officials live in stone manors. Navigation involves endless stairs and risky cargo lifts that bridge the vertical gaps.

The Leaking Keg

The tavern floor is the original deck of the ship, meaning it slopes significantly and creates a constant challenge for balanced walking, especially after a few drinks.

Key Personas

High Harbormaster Corvinus Vane

Corvinus is a man of jarring contradictions. He is a master of administrative order who thrives on the chaotic corruption of the docks. He treats every copper coin with the reverence of a holy relic, yet he will spend thousands on a single bottle of imported Elven vintage to drink alone. He is outwardly obsequious and fawning toward anyone with more power than him, but he is a cruel, mocking tyrant to the laborers and deckhands beneath his station. He harbors an all-consuming, bitter hatred for Captain Marrow, seeing the pirate's freedom as a personal insult to his own tethered, bureaucratic life.

Captain Alistair Marrow Thorne

Marrow is a man of rigid nautical discipline trapped in a civilian's life. He is fiercely loyal to those who show him respect but treats most customers with a biting sarcasm that borders on hostility. While he is a miserly haggler when selling his junk, he is secretly generous to the orphans of the docks, often 'losing' food near them. He is haunted by the loss of his ship and moves between cold, calculating bitterness and explosive bursts of maritime pride.

Elara the Eel Vayn

Elara the Eel Vayn

Elara is a creature of high-strung hospitality; she is excessively polite to those she intends to rob and deceptively blunt with those she considers allies. She maintains a mask of simple-minded eagerness while serving drinks, but her eyes are cold and analytical, recording every whisper in the taproom. She is fiercely protective of the local orphans but would trade a stranger's life for a gold piece if it meant keeping her tunnel-network a secret.

Recover the 'Night-Glass' crate stolen from Captain Marrow before the Harbormaster's 'Tax Collectors' find it.

The party earns Marrow's loyalty and a map to a hidden sea-cave stash.
The Harbormaster gains a powerful magical artifact, tightening his stranglehold on the port's economy.

Investigate why local beggars are disappearing from the docks at low tide.

The party exposes a cult of the Drowned Court operating in the sea-caves.
