Recipe: Dungeon Floor
Beneath the broken mausoleums lies a floor built for the honored dead and remade for the hungry dead. The first corridors are old funeral passages: narrow, formal, and lined with names that have been scraped away. Here, the cult has left fresh wax, ash, and painted sigils over ancient stone, as if trying to convince the ancestors to make room for something far more obedient. The air tastes of incense, damp rot, and the iron tang of old offerings disturbed from their rest. Deeper in, the dungeon tightens around a hidden heart of ritual architecture. Secret doors open onto bone-stacked alcoves, flooded drains, and a chamber where the floor itself seems arranged to channel prayer into a summoning circle. Every room tells the same story in different fragments: tomb guardians broken and reassembled, priests overwritten by zeal, and a necropolis that has stopped being a place of rest and become a machine for calling the dead back to work.
Chalk inscription on the ossuary wall
“The dead were not buried here. They were waiting.”

This outer funerary level is still structurally sound, but every chamber feels violated and watched. The old burial complex has been turned into a pressure valve for cult activity below, with recent rites layered over ancient tomb customs and narrow passages that funnel the unwary toward the inner sanctum.

The Black Ossuary is the cult's inner sanctum, a deeper necropolis floor where mortuary halls were hacked open and turned into a machine for summoning the dead. Its branching catacombs, flooded channels, and sacrificial chambers all feed a central engine of chains, runes, and stolen relics.

An early-floor undead tomb guardian awakened by cult intrusion, built to teach the necropolis is defended by old duties as well as restless dead.

A tragic bridge between living cultist and undead thrall, the Bone Acolyte is a partially transformed ritual servant tasked with guarding keys, carrying offerings, and replenishing the cult's dead with reusable members.

An undead cult leader and ritual mastermind who has transformed the necropolis into a summoning engine, binding the dead into a disciplined choir and using the inner sanctum as a gatehouse for forbidden spirits.

A coffin-fed undead siege brute stitched together by a cult to guard the deeper necropolis, smash through sealed tombwork, and serve as a living summoning engine for the dungeon's fallen dead.

Whispered prayers and lingering necromancy make the necropolis feel alive. Bone dust drifts in the air, candles gutter blue, and faint voices repeat the last words of the buried. When the summoning wards flare, nearby corpses twitch and metal tools grow cold to the touch.
Disadvantage on Stealth checks in candlelit areas; healing magic is reduced by a small amount near active ritual wards.

Investigate the necropolis and descend through the outer crypt to stop the cult’s undead rites before the inner summoning is completed.
Recover a stolen funerary seal or relic from a side chamber and use it to close the summoning conduit.
Find the source of the necromantic corruption and identify who built the floor’s hidden ritual network.
