Contextual Narrative

The Squelching Maw of Oakhaven

The air inside the catacombs is a thick, humid soup of rot and damp earth. Every footstep is met with a sickening 'squelch' as your boots sink into carpets of vibrant, bioluminescent moss that seem to pulse with a faint, rhythmic heartbeat. This was once a sanctified site for the village's plague victims, but the sanctification has long since dissolved into a chaotic slurry of necrotic growth. Deep within the corridors, the limestone walls are slick with moisture, and the silence is punctuated only by the occasional splash of dark water dripping from the ceiling. Thousands of bones are layered beneath the moss, forming a literal floor of forgotten history. Here, death has not led to rest, but to a slow, vegetative digestion that blurs the line between flora and corpse.

Inscription on a cracked headstone at the entrance

Do not weep for the buried. The green-bloom loves them more than the sun ever did.
