The High Lantern
A striking three-story tower built from pale granite and capped with a polished copper dome. The structure sits atop a lonely coastal cliff, its windows fitted with thick, multi-faceted glass that scatters sunlight into vibrant patterns across the interior floors. At its very center, a hollow vertical shaft runs from the foundation to the dome, containing a floating orb of swirling, multicolored light.

The High Lantern
The air is cool and smells of ozone and lemon-scented beeswax. A constant, low-frequency hum vibrates through the soles of your boots, and the lighting is a shifting tapestry of soft violets and warm golds.

Thalene is clinical and precise, speaking in short sentences. She is obsessed with spectral purity and views the living sphere at the tower center as her most important ward and companion.
History
The Prismatic Sphere
The entity at the tower center is a sentient globule of pure energy. In D&D 5E terms, it functions as a Hazard for level 3 players. Any creature touching the sphere takes 3d6 damage of a random type: fire, cold, acid, or lightning. However, a character who succeeds on a DC 14 Wisdom (Insight) check can communicate with it, sensing its deep loneliness and hunger for new colors.
Optical Apparatus and Services
The High Lantern houses several specialized tools available for a fee. Characters can pay 50 gold pieces to use the Great Telescope, granting them advantage on Intelligence (History or Arcana) checks related to celestial events or planes of existence for the next 24 hours.
Security Wards
The tower is protected by light-sensitive runes. During the day, certain mirrors are angled to create 'scorching beams' that block restricted corridors. These beams function as the Scorching Ray spell (targeting anyone who breaks the light path) but can be easily bypassed by using a simple wooden board or a thick cloak to create a shadow.

A nervous young Woman with singed eyebrows who spends most of his day polishing the tower mirrors and recording planetary coordinates.
A medium-sized construct made of translucent quartz. It remains motionless unless someone attempts to touch the central sphere without authorization.
Rumors & Plot Hooks
- 1.The High Prism is not a magical effect but a trapped soul from another dimension.
- 2.Thalene has discovered a way to predict the future by watching how the light refracts through different gemstones.
- 3.The tower vibrates more intensely whenever a storm approaches, as if it is hungry for lightning.
Classified Entry
The living prismatic sphere is slowly draining the color from the surrounding landscape. If left unchecked for another decade, the cliffs and woods nearby will be reduced to a monochrome, lifeless wasteland.
