Wardencrypt

The dead were sealed here for safekeeping. Now they are only waiting for orders.

Beneath a forgotten chapel lies a burial complex that was expanded into a prison for the dead and the living alike. What began as a saintly crypt has become a maze of sealed passages, warded shrines, and one central chamber where the true master of the dungeon still gathers strength.

Cold air seeps through cracked stone and old mortar, carrying the smell of damp earth, candle soot, and long-stale incense. Water drips somewhere below the floor, iron rings whisper in the dark, and every sound seems to travel farther than it should. Dim green mold clings to the walls, while dead braziers and half-buried lantern niches make the halls feel like they are waiting to wake.

☠ Threat

The dungeon is dominated by a self-styled coffin lord, a former grave-warden who has learned to command the dead through the crypt’s old ward network. He is gathering bound spirits from the prison and shrine chambers to finish a rite that will let him rise as something between lich and saint, and the deeper rooms are increasingly warped by his influence.

History

The crypt was raised beneath an old roadside chapel by grave-wardens hired to protect a noble bloodline from theft, curses, and resurrection cults. Over time, the wardens grew secretive and cruel, turning the lower chambers into a prison for dangerous dead and living heretics. When their order collapsed, one of their own stayed behind and took control of the sealed rites.

Corridor Notes

Main connecting corridors between Room 1 and rooms 1, 2, and 4

Narrow wall alcoves hold soot-black candles that relight when living creatures pass, then gutter out as soon as they leave.

Passage between Room 3 and rooms 7, 8, and 9

Several corridor stones are carved with faint tally marks, apparently counting prisoners or burials. The marks grow denser as the party moves deeper.

Hall leading from Room 2 toward Room 6

A thin runnel of dark water crosses the floor and vanishes into a drain grating. It leaves a metallic smell and the occasional drifting bone chip.

Corridor outside Room 5 and Room 7

Broken funerary masks hang from hooks in the walls, their hollow eyes stuffed with gray wax. Touching them stirs a whispering chorus of names.
