Redcliff Fort
The old hill fort still watches the road, but something beneath it is learning to hunt.
This abandoned hill fort once watched the coast and the olive terraces below, but its gatehouse and barracks have been hollowed by an invasive colony of formians. The upper rooms still bear the marks of human defenders, while the deeper chambers have been turned into a brutal hive, complete with tunnels, larvae pits, and beetle pens.
Hot dust and old lime plaster cling to everything, stirred by the dry Mediterranean wind that slips through cracked arrow slits. The fort smells of bat guano, beetle musk, rust, and the sour tang of ant acid, while distant skittering and the scrape of chitin echo through sun-bleached stone.
☠ Threat
A disciplined formian warband has seized the fort and is expanding deeper into the rock with beetle-mounted scouts, soldier patrols, and acid-slick tunnels. Their current leader, a cruel taskmaster in the deepest chamber, is preparing a raid on nearby farms, but the real danger is the hidden queen below, whose brood will flood the hills if the colony is not broken.
History
The fort was raised in the old coastal marches to guard a ridge road and the terraced farms below. It survived bandits, smugglers, and two border wars, but after the garrison was recalled, the lower cistern collapsed and opened into a natural nest of beetles. The formians came through that breach, took the dark, and turned the abandoned stronghold into a hive-fort.
