House Soryn of Stormward Citadel

House Soryn's history can be divided into four eras. The Founding Era began with the rebuilding of the ruined watchfort and ended when Lady Ilyra earned Clan Kim's oath-recognition after the Siege of Black Lantern Gate. The Expansion Era followed, when the house mapped the eastern routes, established supply caches, and turned the citadel into the sole reliable refuge for a wide swath of settlements east of Sliver Basin. That period brought prosperity, but also overconfidence. The Broken Banner Year was the watershed moment that still shapes everything they do. During that year, a coordinated void abyss assault struck while a Kim tax convoy was inside the walls. The house chose to protect the convoy and nearby civilians rather than pursue the fleeing enemy, and the choice saved hundreds. It also caused a months-long famine because the convoy carried winter stores that were then distributed too widely to replace. Some praised the house for mercy; others called it wasteful. From that fracture emerged the house's present tension between compassion and hard necessity. The current era is the Ashen Vigil, defined by constant raids, tighter alliances with Eor, and growing suspicion that the attacks are becoming organized. The citadel has never fallen, but each generation has paid for that record with scars, debt, and a few carefully hidden lies.

Founder’s Story

House Soryn began with Alaric Soryn, a dockwarden’s son who survived the ruin of Stormward Citadel during the Black Tempest. While lesser lords fled inland, Alaric stayed behind with fishermen, laborers, and frightened soldiers, guiding them through the flooded lower wards and pulling survivors from collapsed towers. In the storm’s aftermath he organized food, shelter, and patrols from the citadel’s shattered halls, refusing to let desperation turn the city to lawlessness. His mercy to the hungry and his fairness to the desperate won him allies among the common folk and respect from the crown. When raiders later returned to claim the broken fortress, Alaric united the defenders and held the walls until reinforcements arrived. For that steadfast courage and his refusal to abandon either duty or compassion, he was granted Stormward Citadel and raised as the first lord of House Soryn, a noble line sworn to shield the coast and protect all who call it home.

The Mechanism of Intent

Public Goals
  • Protect Eor from the monsters of the void abyss
  • Keep the eastern road safe for merchants, farmers, and messengers
  • Maintain the honor and obligations of vassalage to Clan Kim
  • Stand as the first and final shield against ascender attacks
  • Secret Goals
  • Determine whether the void abyss knot beneath the citadel can be safely sealed, relocated, or destroyed.
  • Prevent Clan Kim from reassigning the citadel's command after the next crisis.
  • Identify and eliminate the internal faction willing to use abyssal power as a deterrent weapon
  • Find out whether the ascender attacks are being drawn by something in the citadel itself
  • Current Objectives
  • Hold the citadel through the next ascender season without ceding any of the eastern watch towers
  • Keep Eor supplied with protective escorts, monster warnings, and emergency refuge
  • Secure enough grain, ore, and arrowwood to survive a prolonged siege
  • Identify the source of the recent coordinated void abyss attacks
  • Long-Term Vision

To turn the eastern edge of Sliver Basin into a permanently defended frontier where settlements can grow without living in fear of nightly raids, and to ensure House Soryn is remembered as the shield that made such peace possible.

    StructureNoble House
SuccessionSuccession follows blood right only if the heir can also be confirmed by the Shield Captains and at least two senior wardens. In practice, a crisis can alter everything. A proven commander who saves the citadel may be named regent, while a weak heir can be bypassed through a formal challenge, a family council, or quiet political pressure from Clan Kim.

Proud, strategic, and quietly resentful of being seen as a mere enforcer.

Mistress Sera Vell Chief Steward and Master of Supply

Warm in public, ruthless in emergencies, and excellent at reading the weak points in both stone and politics.

Brother Keth of the White Lamp Lantern Scholar and Seal Keeper

    Gentle, brilliant, and unsettlingly curious.

Captain Ilyen Mora Shield Captain of the East Rampart

Blunt, practical, fearless, and deeply protective of recruits.
