The Ossuary of Sunken Stars

Founded during the Age of Sundering, the Ossuary began as a group of mages who realized that magic was physically leaking out of the world through planar rifts. They believed that if enough arcane energy dissipated, reality itself would crumble into the Ethereal Plane. They began a massive project to harvest 'residual' magic from battlefields and ancient ruins, storing it in physical vessels. Their defining moment was the Siege of Argent Hall, where they refused to use their stockpiled power to save a dying kingdom, choosing instead to preserve the energy for the 'greater stability of the universe.' This event cemented their reputation as heartless but necessary archivists of the arcane.

Founder’s Story

Archmage Valerius Thorne founded the order after witnessing the collapse of a minor deity. He realized that even divine power is finite. He blinded himself with a ritual involving starlight to gain 'Blind-Sight' into the Weave, allowing him to see where magical energy was fraying. He spent his final decades building the Silent Observatory and training the first generation of Scribes to 'stitch' the world back together using silver needles and astral thread.

The Mechanism of Intent

Public Goals
  • Cataloging magical anomalies and wild magic zones.
  • Preserving ancient artifacts that are too dangerous for public use.
  • Providing neutral mediation in magical disputes between kingdoms.
  • Maintaining a global registry of high-level spellcasters.
  • Secret Goals
  • Siphoning energy from the world's Ley Lines to fuel a massive containment field.
  • Eliminating sorcerers whose innate magic is deemed 'unstable' or 'leaky'.
  • Acquiring the literal souls of dead archmages to use as batteries for their vaults.
  • Current Objectives
  • Acquire the Heart of the Fallen Star from the ruins of Kaz-Adur.
  • Infiltrate the royal courts of the Silver Marches to monitor their use of teleportation circles.
  • Neutralize a growing Wild Magic surge in the Whispering Woods.
  • Long-Term Vision

To create a world where magic is strictly regulated and contained within a closed loop, preventing the heat-death of the Weave and ensuring the Ossuary's eternal relevance as its sole keepers.

    StructureStrict Meritocratic Bureaucracy
SuccessionWhen a High Custodian dies or steps down, the three most senior Scribes and the Captain of the Wardens hold a 'Silent Ballot.' The Weave is consulted via a specialized ritual, and the candidate who resonates most with the current 'vibration' of the vault is chosen.

    Leadership

High Custodian Elara Vance The Weaver of Stillness

Cold, analytical, and profoundly patient. She views people as temporary vessels of energy rather than individuals.

Master Scribe Kaelen Head of Research

Nervous, brilliant, and secretly empathetic toward those the Ossuary 'silences.'

Captain Vorne Chief of the Astral Wardens

A grim warrior-mage who treats every mission like a surgical procedure.
