Crudely Carved Totem
This fist-sized wooden idol looks like it was hacked from green branchwood with a dull knife and carved by trembling hands. Its face is little more than two slits for eyes and a jagged mouth, yet the grooves in the wood seem to shift into different expressions when viewed from the corner of your eye. Thin iron nails pin in scraps of moth-eaten twine, old ash, and tiny splinters of bone. When held, it is faintly warm, smells of rain-soaked pine, and you can sometimes feel a pulse inside it, like sap flowing through a heart.
