The Caretakers of the Infinite Archive - AI-generated fantasy Monster

The Caretakers of the Infinite Archive

The Caretakers of the Infinite Archive are ancient custodians born from the need to preserve all knowledge without letting any one piece of it dominate. Shelvers maintain order. Ladderkeepers maintain access. Lamplighters maintain comprehension. Bookbinders maintain continuity. The Maskless One maintains the terrible silence between recorded truths. They do not serve the books so much as the promise that every story, every lie, every destiny, and every self may be found, if one is willing to pay the price of reading it.

Archive-Drift. The Caretaker has advantage on checks and saves to resist being moved, shoved, knocked prone, or restrained by terrain. In addition, difficult terrain composed of books, shelves, scrolls, or ladders does not cost it extra movement.
Perfect Catalog. The Caretaker knows the location of every book, shelf, ladder, lantern, and sealed passage within 1 mile of the Archive's core stacks, even through barriers, and it cannot be surprised while within the Archive.
Wisp Form. As a bonus action, the Caretaker can become wisp-like until the start of its next turn. While wisp-like, it can move through creatures and objects as though they were difficult terrain, taking 5 force damage if it ends its turn inside one.
Spellcasting. The Caretaker is a 9th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Intelligence. It requires no components for its spells while within the Archive.
Pageguard. Once per turn when the Caretaker or an ally within 30 feet takes damage, the Caretaker can reduce that damage by 10 as pages, ribbons, or binding strips absorb the impact.
Shelf-Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 21 () bludgeoning damage plus 18 () psychic damage, and the target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn as scattered memories of page order and purpose flood their mind.
Lantern Beam. Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 27 () radiant damage, and a different creature of the Caretaker's choice within 20 feet of the target regains 18 () hit points as the stolen clarity spills into the archive's wards.
Index Cascade. The Caretaker tears open a seam in the stacks and conjures a storm of flying folios in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point it can see within 120 feet. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 36 () slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails also has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn.
Unwritten Memory. The Maskless One only. The Caretaker forces one creature it can see within 60 feet to relive a forgotten scene. The target must succeed on a Intelligence saving throw or take 45 () psychic damage and be stunned until the end of its next turn. On a successful save, the target takes half damage and is not stunned.
Reassign Route. When a creature within 30 feet moves to a wrong shelf, wrong ladder, or wrong aisle, the Caretaker forces it to reroute. The creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or have its movement reduced to 0 until the end of the current turn.
Marginalia Shield. When the Caretaker or an ally within 30 feet is hit by an attack, the Caretaker can reduce the damage by 17 () as a book, mask, or lantern intercepts the blow.
Shift the Stack. The Caretaker moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks, or it swaps places with a ladder, shelf cart, or floating book stack it can see within 30 feet.
Misfile (Costs 2 Actions). One creature the Caretaker can see within 60 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be forced to move up to 20 feet to the nearest open aisle, shelf edge, or ladder rung of the Caretaker's choice.
Restore the Margin (Costs 2 Actions). The Caretaker targets one creature it can see within 60 feet. The target gains 15 temporary hit points, or if it has 0 hit points it instead regains 15 hit points.
Erase the Footnote (Costs 3 Actions). The Maskless One only. One creature within 60 feet must make a Intelligence saving throw or lose one prepared spell, one known spell of 5th level or lower, or one reaction until the end of its next turn, representing a moment of catastrophic forgetfulness. If the target has none of those options, it takes 22 () psychic damage instead.
