Euphorax, the Psionic Cortex - AI-generated fantasy Monster

Euphorax, the Psionic Cortex

Scholars think the creature is an aberrant offshoot of psionic evolution rather than a true mind flayer descendant. Criminal anatomists call its brain a Psionic Cortex, a living focus that retains bliss-charge for only a short time after death. The nearer it is to death, the more intense and unstable its psionics become, which is why harvest crews often try to keep it barely alive until the last possible instant. Those who integrate a properly preserved cortex sometimes report ecstatic clarity, heightened telepathy, and a dangerous craving to hear other minds crack open.

Psionic Apex. The cortex has advantage on saving throws against being charmed, frightened, stunned, or paralyzed. If it succeeds on a saving throw against a spell or effect that would deal psychic damage, it takes no damage on a success.
Bloodied Ascension. When the cortex drops below half its hit points, its psionic attacks deal an extra psychic damage, and its save DC for Euphoria Pulse and Thought Shear increases by 1.
Euphoric Telepathy. The cortex can speak telepathically to any creature it can see within 120 feet. A creature that fails a Wisdom saving throw against this telepathy has disadvantage on its next attack roll or saving throw before the end of its next turn as it is flooded with blissful intrusive thoughts.
Psionic Cortex. If the cortex is reduced to 0 hit points, its body collapses into an inert shell after 1 round unless a creature uses specialized psionic extraction equipment to harvest the Psionic Cortex first. A harvested cortex remains potent only if preserved quickly.
Psionic Rend. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 () psychic damage, and the target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on the next attack roll or saving throw it makes before the end of its next turn as its thoughts are briefly drowned in blissful static.
Mind Lance. Ranged Psionic Attack: to hit, range 120 ft., one creature. Hit: 27 () psychic damage, and the target must succeed on a Intelligence saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn. If the cortex is Bloodied, this damage becomes 31 () psychic damage instead.
Euphoria Pulse. The cortex opens a blooming wave of euphoric terror in a 30-foot radius centered on itself. Each creature of its choice in that area must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 36 () psychic damage and is charmed until the end of its next turn. On a success, a creature takes half damage and is not charmed. A creature charmed this way has its speed reduced by 10 feet as its limbs feel wonderfully heavy. The cortex can use this ability and immediately move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Thought Shear. The cortex targets one creature it can see within 60 feet that is charmed, stunned, or incapacitated by it. The target must succeed on a Intelligence saving throw or be incapacitated until the start of the cortex's next turn as a spine of crystal thought knits itself through its mind. The target repeats the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.
Psychic Feedback. When the cortex takes damage from a creature it can see, it can force that creature to make a Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, the creature takes 13 () psychic damage and cannot take reactions until the end of its next turn. On a success, it takes half damage and is not deprived of reactions. If the cortex is Bloodied, the damage becomes 18 ().
Slipstream Thought. The cortex moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Piercing Intuition (Costs 2 Actions). The cortex makes one Mind Lance attack.
Overwhelm the Mind (Costs 3 Actions). The cortex uses Euphoria Pulse or Thought Shear, if available.
Cantrips
Innate Psionicspsionics The cortex can cast the following innate psionic spells, requiring no components and using Intelligence as its spellcasting ability. At will: detect thoughts, mage hand, minor illusion. 3/day each: hold monster, telekinesis, confusion. 1/day each: psychic scream, dominate monster.
9th level
Crystallized Dying Thoughtpsionics This power is available only while the cortex is Bloodied or fewer hit points remain. It uses the stronger save DC and is treated as a 9th-level effect for dispel or suppression purposes, though it is not magical in the ordinary sense.
