Appearance
Varek has the weathered look of a man repeatedly repaired rather than allowed to heal. His face is narrow, wind-burned, and marked by a pale rope scar that runs from his left ear to the corner of his mouth. His hands are broad and heavily callused, with black iron dust worked permanently into the creases of his fingers. He walks with a sailor's rolling balance even on dry ground, yet when he stands still he becomes unnervingly motionless, as if listening through the soles of his boots. His coat smells of tar, wet wool, and cloves. The contradictory detail is his immaculate white cuffs, changed every morning by someone he refuses to name.
“Varek speaks in a warm, low register with clipped sailor's phrasing. He favors practical metaphors, pauses before names, and lowers his voice whenever he mentions the fog.”

Distinguishing Features
A rope scar from the left ear to the corner of the mouth.
Permanent iron-black staining beneath the fingernails.
Spotless white cuffs that contrast with his battered maritime clothing.
A brass compass whose needle points toward the hills rather than north when the fog thickens.
A habit of tilting his head toward empty doorways as if someone is whispering there.
Voice
“A pleasant, weathered baritone that can become as sharp as a snapped hawser when he gives an order.”
Clothing
A dark green oilskin coat over a faded red waistcoat, heavy sea boots, fingerless gloves, a brass compass on a black cord, and spotless white cuffs. His belt carries a boarding hook, a folding knife, and three iron nails wrapped in sailcloth.
Body Language
Varek keeps his shoulders loose and his hands visible in public, projecting easy competence. When someone mentions the Saint Orra, his thumb presses hard against the first knuckle of his right hand. Around the harbor elder, he smiles too broadly and angles his body like a fencer waiting for an opening.
