Appearance
Pippin is a narrow-limbed boy with quick, birdlike movements and the tense posture of someone who expects a hand to strike or a door to shut. His face is smudged with soot that never seems fully gone, and his clothes are patched so many times they look like a map of old mistakes. He wears an oversized coat with one sleeve cut short, a red scarf knotted around his wrist instead of his neck, and boots that are too large by half a size. The surprising thing about him is how carefully he keeps himself clean where it matters most: his fingernails are scrubbed pale, and his hair is always neatly combed as if he is pretending to belong to someone respectable.
“He talks quickly when nervous, pauses too long before asking favors, and uses little nicknames for places and people he trusts. When he is earnest, his voice softens into a careful, almost adult politeness that makes him sound older than he is.”

Distinguishing Features
A crescent-shaped burn scar behind his left ear
A red scarf tied around his wrist like a promise
One front tooth chipped from a fall off a coal cart
A habit of turning his pocket stone over and over with his thumb
Voice
“Fast, breathy, and bright with a worn edge, like someone who learned to sound cheerful before he learned to feel safe”
Clothing
A patched brown coat with one brass button, a soot-gray shirt, knee-bagged trousers, a red scarf worn as a wrist wrap, oversized boots, and a string pouch tied under his shirt
Body Language
Keeps his shoulders angled as if he is always ready to slip sideways, and he fidgets with his scarf when frightened. When he lies, he stares at the floor with exaggerated politeness; when he is excited, he bounces on the balls of his feet like a kettle about to whistle.
