Appearance
Tomas Reed is a pale, narrow-faced miller with skin that looks flour-dusted even after washing, as if the river itself has bleached him. He moves with a careful, side-stepping gait learned on slick planks and wet stone, always as though he is balancing an invisible sack on one shoulder. His hands are thick at the knuckles but delicate at the fingertips, the hands of a man who can lift a grain-bag and also notice a single cracked kernel in a heap. The odd contradiction is his clothing: a severe black wool coat kept impeccably brushed and buttoned, worn over patched trousers and a stained apron that smells of oats, rain, and lamp oil. He seems both sternly proper and perpetually one gust away from collapse.
“Soft, clipped, and careful, with long pauses as though he is weighing each word on invisible scales. He rarely raises his voice, but when he does, it carries over water like a bell.”

Distinguishing Features
A flour-white scar along the left side of his neck, earned from a snapped mill blade.
One boot always has a damp hem no matter the weather.
He wears a river-stone charm on a string under his shirt.
His left thumb is shortened and blunt from an old grinding accident.
Voice
“Low, papery, and dry as old flour, with an undertone of fatigue that sharpens into iron when his work is threatened.”
Clothing
A black wool coat with brass buttons, a gray apron stained by flour and river mud, patched brown trousers, worn leather boots with one cracked sole, and a corded belt carrying a knife, ledger slate, and whistle.
Body Language
Rigid and economical in motion, with sudden stillness whenever the river changes sound. When uneasy, he presses his thumb to his lower lip and squints as if measuring something far away.
