The Opening

A moonlit messenger arrives at the bastion with dew still shining on her sleeves and a silver invitation pressed into her hand. The letter bears Illarien's name and a phrase no farmer should ever be asked to answer: attendance is demanded, replacement is preferred. Before the night ends, one of your nearby fields blooms with impossible flowers, and the villagers who smell them begin to walk toward the dark in their sleep.

Set the Scene

At dusk, a barefoot messenger staggers into the bastion yard carrying a ribbon-tied letter that smells of roses and wet stone. When opened, the invitation unfolds into a corridor of light that briefly shows a ballroom full of masked figures turning in perfect silence, then collapses into ordinary parchment that simply says Illarien must come at once. In the same hour, the nearest wheat field lays itself flat in a perfect spiral, and every bird on the property flees toward the woods.

Rumours

d5 · table
  1. 01
The court does not abduct the beautiful, it crowns the proper.
  2. 02
Thiara was seen arguing with a black-clad rider at the old mill before the abduction.
  3. 03
Anyone who accepts tea from Eridanthe is expected to remember the taste forever.
  4. 04
A pact can be broken if its first promise is spoken under the right tree at midnight.
  5. 05
The vanished villagers are not dead, only politely misplaced.
Stakes

If the party delays, the glamour spreads from field to field, villagers vanish into polite midnight processions, and Eridanthe's claim on Illarien hardens into a permanent identity theft. The bastion's surrounding lands can become a fey borderland where harvests obey etiquette, names lose meaning, and Thiara's sabotage becomes increasingly effective.

Ticking Clock·By the third night, the nearest farms begin sleeping in the fields. By the fifth night, the court's wreath is woven. At dawn after that, Illarien is no longer a guest but a lawful replacement.

Background Lore

Near the party's bastion outside Waterdeep lies a ring of small farms and hedgerows where the soil runs rich and the evenings carry salt from the coast. The sisters Thiara and Illarien once worked one of those farms, known for pale pears and sweet grain, until fey attention fell on their family. Now Illarien has been taken by the fey court of beauty, and the archfey Eridanthe intends to enthrone her in the place reserved for Thiara, twisting kinship into etiquette and obligation. Thiara herself has been corrupted by the Shackled One and is actively obstructing any rescue, but her actions remain the tragic result of chains she cannot yet fully see.

What the World Knows

Illarien, a farmer from the lands near the party's bastion outside Waterdeep, has been taken by the fey court of beauty. The party must reach the court, survive its dangerous etiquette, and bring her home before the court's claim becomes permanent. Thiara, Illarien's sister, is entangled with a darker power and may hinder the rescue unless she can be redeemed or outmaneuvered.
