The Opening

The Rumble in the Deep is only days away, and Waterdeep has turned its hunger into a tournament. Champions, monsters, and moneylenders are already circling the arena, and one face from Brok's past has come to claim the hammer Vorundr before the first bell rings.

Set the Scene

The arena doors open onto a chamber of torchlight, wagers, and roaring crowds, while officials call names from a gilded list and a herald announces that every match is watched by the city, the guilds, and the underworld. As the party enters, a clerk quietly points Brok toward a waiting woman in travel-worn armor who is staring at Vorundr as if it were already hers.

Rumours

d5 · table
  1. 01
The bracket is rigged around a few golden favorites and one beast nobody was meant to see.
  2. 02
A claimant from Brok's past has proof that Vorundr was taken during a private brawl, not won fairly.
  3. 03
Someone in the audience is not betting on fighters but on which faction loses face first.
  4. 04
The showcase monster was shipped in under a false manifest and kept in the lower pens by a bribe.
  5. 05
If the party throws a match on purpose, a debt collector will quietly erase what they owe.
Stakes

If the party fails to act, the bracket will finish without them, Sera will gain legal and moral leverage over Vorundr, and a sponsor-backed catastrophe could turn the competition into a public disaster that stains the party's name. Success can buy fame, debt relief, allies, and access to Waterdeep's hidden power networks, but it can also create enemies who remember every round.

Ticking Clock·The final bracket round begins at sundown on the third day, and after that the officials will certify the winner's claim before the crowd, the sponsors, and the Watch.

Background Lore

Waterdeep loves a spectacle, and the undercity loves an angle. The Rumble in the Deep is a sanctioned, bracket-style fighting competition held in a converted vault beneath the city, where champions, monsters, and hired hazards battle for prize coin, bragging rights, and patronage from the Masked Lords, guild factors, and criminal brokers who all pretend to be above the gambling. The event has become a pressure valve for every faction in the city, which means every match has an audience and every favor has a price. Brok has already been talking about Vorundr for months, and now someone from his past has entered the city with the patience, paperwork, and witnesses needed to demand it back in public.

What the World Knows

The Rumble in the Deep is a sanctioned fighting competition in Waterdeep where the party can earn fame, coin, and city favor by entering the bracket, backing a fighter, or navigating the politics behind the event. A claimant from Brok's past appears with a public grievance over the hammer Vorundr, and the party must decide whether to settle the dispute in the ring, through negotiations, or by exposing the truth before the event spirals out of control.
