The Opening

Mara Thorne begs for help as night bells sound from the abandoned quarry and her daughter vanishes below ground. The old shaft was sealed for a reason, but someone has broken the stone sigils and the wells have started to run warm. If you go down there, bring ropes, lanterns, and a way to keep your promises.

Set the Scene

At dusk, the village square goes quiet as a bell rings from beneath the quarry hill, though no bell tower stands there. Mara Thorne pushes through the crowd with a lantern in one hand and a torn child-sized scarf in the other, then asks the party to help before the next ring comes at midnight.

Rumours

d4 · table
  1. 01
The quarry used to be a shrine before it was a mine.
  2. 02
Dogs howl only when the bells ring, never before.
  3. 03
A sealed stone door under the old winch room has fresh scratch marks on the far side.
  4. 04
Mara's family has lived in Brindleford longer than anyone else and never talks about the hill.
Stakes

If the party fails, Brindleford loses its water, the missing villager is consumed or transformed, and the buried bell-spirit gains a foothold in the waking world. If they succeed, they earn the trust of a whole village and expose a deeper ancient threat beneath the quarry.

Ticking Clock·At each sunset, the bells ring once more and the seal weakens. After the third ringing, the vault begins its final opening and the missing villager can no longer be saved without a dangerous bargain.

Background Lore

The hamlet of Brindleford sits beside old marl quarries that were abandoned after a vein of black glass was found under the stone. Since then, the wells have run warm at night, livestock have wandered into the woods, and strange bells have been heard from beneath the quarry floor. The locals blame smugglers, witches, and bad luck in equal measure, but the truth is older and far stranger.

What the World Knows

A missing villager, strange bells, and a haunted quarry have the people of Brindleford frightened. The party is asked to find the source of the disturbance, rescue the missing person, and make sure the old mine is safe again. Along the way they will face cave-ins, desperate cultists, and a deep chamber filled with black stone and old magic.
