Contextual Narrative

The Last Clarion of Aethelgard

The sky over Aethelgard has bled crimson for a fortnight, ever since the first Abyss-gate tore through the capital’s spire. The air is thick with the stench of sulfur and the metallic tang of blood, vibrating with the rhythmic thrum of a world being unmade. Cities that stood for millennia have been reduced to ash in hours, their populations harvested by the chattering masses of the infinite pits. In the center of the devastation stands the final bastion—the Bastion of the Weeping Sun. Here, the last survivors of a dozen races huddle, listening to the thunderous footsteps of the Maw-Herald as it leads the final assault. The old gods are silent, their icons crumbling, leaving only the desperate and the brave to stand against the tide of darkness that seeks to swallow existence itself.

High Exarch Vaelen, during the Fall of Argentis

Quest Objectives

Hold the Shattered Gate against three waves of the Maw-Herald’s vanguard to allow the refugees to board the Sky-Arks.

Hundreds of civilians escape; the party gains a temporary 'Aura of Hope' (Advantage on saves vs. Frightened).
The refugees are slaughtered, and the party is forced to flee into the wasteland with no support.

Retrieve the 'Cinder of the Sun-Father' from the ruins of the High Temple to reignite the dying barrier gods.

The barrier stabilizes, weakening all demons in a 5-mile radius (reducing their AC by 2).
The barrier fails completely, allowing the Maw-Herald to teleport directly into the civilian quarters.
