plains
Recipe: Wilderness Encounter
Where the Grass Learns Your Name
The plains roll outward in long, gold-green waves, broken here and there by wind-carved gullies and the black ribs of old fence posts. Grass hisses against itself in the constant breeze, and every sound seems to travel too far: a snapped twig, a distant whistle, the low, patient breathing of something hidden below the horizon line. In the center of this broad country lies a half-forgotten campsite, where wagon ruts circle a cold fire pit and claw-scratched warning marks stain a lone standing stone. By daylight, the land looks empty. By dusk, the emptiness feels deliberate. Tracks cross and recross the camp in nervous patterns: one set light and circling, another heavy and direct, as if two hungry claimants are contesting the same ground. A frightened traveler or scout keeps to the edge of the site, watching the grass too closely and flinching at every rise in the wind. The party can slip through the reeds, bargain for guidance, challenge the predators openly, or simply choose a longer road and leave the plains to their feuding hunters.
Charred Wagon Wheel
““The grass remembers every footstep. If you hear it go quiet, run.” The quote text represents the sense of warning left behind by those who fled.”
Windroad Steppe
Windlane Packstalker
A plains pack predator that hunts with disciplined coordination, scavenges the abandoned campsite and wagons, and pressures intruders through flanking, distraction, and sudden bursts from cover.
Hollowback Stampede Beast
A second plains predator-beast, larger and more dangerous at close range than the first, built to feel like the land itself has become hostile. It is a territorial bruiser that charges across open ground, tramples cover, and can be redirected, calmed, or baited into a clash with the other monster.

Regional Effect
Whispering Steppe Wind
A steady crosswind bends the grass in odd waves, masking movement at a distance and making the whole plain seem to breathe around intruders.
Ranged attacks beyond normal range have disadvantage, and Stealth checks are easier or harder depending on whether characters move with the wind.
