cros.land Alternatives: 5 AI D&D Tools I Tested in 2026

cros.land is a solid solo-built suite of AI D&D generators. Kenji has shipped a real working free tier with monster, dungeon, NPC, encounter, and magic item generators. For DMs who want broader feature coverage, integrated visual content, or different pricing, here are the five I tested in March and April 2026.

Same campaign, same prompts, same target output, with the tradeoffs that actually showed up in my run.

CharGen

AI D&D platform with broader generators, integrated visuals, and a free tier.

What I run weekly. CharGen covers the same generator ground as cros.land (NPCs, monsters, encounters, magic items, dungeons, settlements) and adds visual content (portraits, VTT tokens, 3D model files, voice generation), a region map generator, and entity linkage across the campaign. Free tier covers casual prep. The trade against cros.land is the Roll20 Chrome extension. cros.land has a direct Roll20 integration that auto-fills statblocks, which CharGen does not match. Pricing is also different. cros.land starts at $5/mo Patreon, CharGen at £9.99/mo.

What it does well

  • Broader feature set: visual content, voice, 3D files, region maps
  • Free tier covers casual prep, no card required
  • Linked entities across NPCs, settlements, factions, regions
  • Multiple AI image models in one UI

What it doesn't

  • No direct Roll20 Chrome extension like cros.land has
  • More expensive entry tier (£9.99 vs $5 cros.land Patreon)
  • Smaller community than cros.land's Patreon supporters
Best for

DMs who want cros.land's generator coverage plus visual content and broader workflow integration.

LitRPG Adventures

Established AI D&D content generator with longer-running content library.

LitRPG Adventures is the closest direct competitor to cros.land in the AI D&D content space. Both produce similar output (NPCs, dungeons, encounters, magic items). LitRPG Adventures has a longer-running user base and a deeper backlog of generated examples. The trade against cros.land is no free tier and a higher subscription cost. LitRPG Adventures' pricing starts at $9.99/mo, cros.land's free tier covers most casual use.

Best for

DMs who want established AI D&D content generation and value the longer-running platform.

Donjon

Free table-driven D&D generators, no AI but reliable and fast.

Donjon predates the AI era and does not use AI at all. Table-driven random generators for NPCs, dungeons, treasure, names, settlements. Free, no signup, instant load. As a cros.land alternative, it trades AI cohesion for reliability and zero friction. For DMs who want fast random rolls without AI variability, Donjon remains the most reliable free option.

DMs who want fast free random rolls without AI variability or signup friction.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

General AI as a flexible prompt-driven D&D content generator.

ChatGPT is the flexible alternative to cros.land's structured generators. Instead of filling in a form on a category page, you describe what you want and the model generates it. More cohesive than table rolls, more flexible than fixed templates. The trade is no D&D-specific tooling, no entity linkage, no save-as-record. For DMs who already use ChatGPT and want flexible AI generation, it works as a substitute for cros.land's text generators (though not for the Roll20 integration or visual content).

Best for

DMs who want flexible AI generation without structured D&D forms.

Kassoon

Free table-driven D&D generators with town integration.

Kassoon takes the table-driven approach (no AI) but adds integration that some cros.land generators lack. Town generation links NPCs, shops, and rumours together. Combat encounter builder accepts party level and difficulty. Free with no signup. As an alternative to cros.land, it trades AI flexibility for instant load, zero cost, and reliable table output.

Best for

DMs who want cros.land-style integrated content for free without AI.

Switching from cros.land

How to switch in ten minutes.

If you have been using cros.land for AI D&D content, the switch to CharGen takes about ten minutes. Open the NPC Generator, drop in the same role plus visual hook you would feed cros.land, and CharGen drafts a portrait, a stat hook, and a saved entity record. Your existing cros.land library still has value as reference. Both tools are indie solo-built, so running both in parallel is a reasonable position. cros.land's Roll20 Chrome extension still works regardless of which generator you use as the source.

FAQ

Common DM questions about this lineup.

Q01

What is the best free cros.land alternative in 2026?

CharGen and Donjon are the strongest free alternatives. CharGen's free tier covers AI-driven prep with visual content, similar to cros.land's free generators plus portraits and tokens. Donjon is fully free with no signup if you prefer table-driven random rolls without AI. Kassoon is the third option for free integrated content without AI.

Q02

Is cros.land still worth using if I have these alternatives?

Yes if you value the Roll20 Chrome extension, the chase tracker, and the GM dashboard, which are unique to cros.land in this lineup. Kenji's free tier is genuinely usable, the platform is actively maintained, and the $5 Patreon tier is the cheapest paid AI D&D option in this comparison. Most working DMs who try the alternatives end up running one of them as the primary tool and keeping cros.land for its specific features.

Q03

Which alternative produces the best NPCs?

CharGen produces the most usable NPCs, with portraits, stat hooks, and links to settlement and faction records. LitRPG Adventures produces strong AI NPCs with an established library. Donjon and Kassoon produce reliable free NPCs without AI variability. ChatGPT produces strong long-form NPC writing if you accept the lack of D&D tooling.

Q04

Does CharGen have a Roll20 integration like cros.land?

No. cros.land's Roll20 Chrome extension is a feature CharGen does not currently match. CharGen exports VTT-ready tokens that work with Roll20, Foundry, and Fantasy Grounds, but not via a Chrome extension that auto-fills statblocks. If the Roll20 integration is your primary reason for using cros.land, it is a real gap in CharGen.

Q05

Which alternative is cheapest for serious AI D&D use?

cros.land's $5/mo Patreon is the cheapest paid AI D&D tier in this lineup. CharGen's £9.99/mo Plus is the next cheapest paid AI option. LitRPG Adventures starts at $9.99/mo. Donjon and Kassoon are fully free but do not use AI. ChatGPT Plus is $20/mo but covers far more than D&D.

Q06

Are these tools safe for commercial or published TTRPG content?

Each platform has its own terms. Donjon and Kassoon generate from public-domain or original tables, generally safer for commercial use. AI tools (CharGen, cros.land, LitRPG Adventures, ChatGPT) require you to read the current terms before publishing. AI content licensing changes regularly. Always check current terms before commercial use.
