The Silver Basin Bazaar

Busy, colorful, and pleasantly chaotic. Hawkers call out prices over the clatter of carts, the ringing of hammers, and the smell of roasting onions, hot bread, leather, lamp oil, and foreign spices. The mood is generally friendly, but every bargain attracts several listeners, and a sharp-eyed visitor may notice pickpockets, spies, smugglers, or rival merchants moving through the crowd.

Architectural StyleA broad, practical market hall of timber, brick, and painted plaster, built around an open central court. Heavy roof beams support colored awnings and covered walkways, while wide archways allow carts and crowds to move between the outer lanes. The design favors shade, airflow, drainage, and easy repairs over decoration, though carved wooden signs and bright merchant banners give the bazaar a welcoming character.

History

The Silver Basin began as a muddy roadside trading camp beside an old stone well. As the town grew, the first permanent stalls were built around the well, and the market expanded whenever a new caravan route became profitable. A fire destroyed much of the eastern section nearly thirty years ago, but the merchants rebuilt with brick foundations, tiled drainage channels, and a large roof that now shelters the busiest lanes. The name comes from the shallow silver-colored basin that once stood over the original well. The basin is still displayed in the Well Court, polished weekly and guarded against thieves.

Market Layout

The bazaar has six main lanes. The Grain Walk sells flour, dried beans, salt, cooking oil, and animal feed. The Copper Lane holds metalworkers, armorers, tool sellers, and a busy secondhand stall. The Cloth Row offers linen, wool, dyed fabrics, boots, belts, and common adventuring gear. The Spice Court is crowded with food vendors, tea merchants, perfumers, and sellers of imported sweets. The Lantern Steps are reserved for books, maps, curiosities, charms, and small magical goods. At the center stands the covered Well Court, where travelers find fresh water, public notices, moneychangers, and benches.

Goods and Services

Most goods are mundane and reasonably priced, though a character who spends at least an hour haggling, comparing stalls, or helping a merchant can find useful bargains. Adventuring equipment, common clothing, tools, food, rope, lamp oil, pack animals, and basic weapons are readily available. Once each market day, the party can locate one uncommon item such as a potion of healing, antitoxin, a disguise kit, a silvered weapon, or a scroll containing a 1st-level spell. These uncommon goods are usually hidden among ordinary merchandise and require a successful DC 13 Charisma or Intelligence check, or a convincing favor for one of the merchants.

Market Rules and Security

The bazaar opens at sunrise and closes shortly after dusk. Three watch officers and six hired guards patrol the main lanes, while stall owners keep an informal eye on one another. Theft is punished by repayment, public disgrace, and temporary banishment unless the stolen item is dangerous or tied to local politics. Magic that causes obvious harm is forbidden, but healing, identification, minor illusions, and harmless divination are tolerated. The market maintains a covered wagon yard, a public stable, a weighing house, and a small counting room for large transactions.

Posted Contracts

Merchants periodically post short-term work on the board beside the Well Court. Common contracts include escorting a shipment, recovering stolen goods, identifying counterfeit coins, guarding a valuable animal, settling a dispute between rival sellers, or investigating why a delivery never arrived. Most jobs pay between 10 and 50 gold pieces, with additional discounts or favors from the grateful merchant. The board is also a useful source of rumors, but several postings are deliberately vague because the people behind them do not want the local authorities involved.

Mara Venn Market Keeper and Senior Proprietor

Practical, observant, fair-minded, and difficult to impress. Mara speaks plainly, keeps careful records, and has little patience for bullies or people who waste her time. Beneath her stern manner, she is protective of the merchants and workers who depend on the bazaar.

Mara Venn Market Keeper

A broad-shouldered woman in her late fifties with silver-streaked hair and a habit of remembering every debt. She settles disputes with calm questions rather than threats and knows which merchants are honest, desperate, or dangerous. She offers the party a discount if they stop a feud between two stall owners without drawing the watch.

Rafi Dalan Spice Merchant

A cheerful young spice merchant who exaggerates the exotic origins of nearly everything he sells. Rafi is genuinely well connected and can arrange introductions to caravan masters, sailors, and foreign traders. He has recently begun receiving sealed packages from a sender who refuses to meet him in person.

Orsik Bale Secondhand Arms Dealer

A retired adventurer missing two fingers from his left hand. He sells used weapons, repaired shields, climbing gear, and maps of nearby roads. Orsik is blunt but dependable, and he recognizes several old ruins that appear on the party's maps. He quietly buys relics before the authorities can confiscate them.

Nella Quill Moneychanger

A precise, soft-spoken halfling who runs the moneychanger's booth. Nella can identify clipped coins, forged seals, and unusual currencies at a glance. She has noticed a recent increase in counterfeit silver and suspects the source is inside the town, not outside it.

Tovin Marr Market Guard Captain

A sharp-eyed guard captain who patrols the bazaar in a blue sash and carries a short baton rather than a drawn weapon. Tovin dislikes unnecessary violence and respects people who solve problems quietly. He is willing to share information about local criminals if the party helps protect a vulnerable witness.

Rumors & Plot Hooks

  1. 1.A caravan that arrived last week carried a locked chest that was never listed on its manifest. The chest is still somewhere in the bazaar.
  2. 2.Someone has been replacing genuine silver coins with nearly perfect counterfeits, but only moneychangers and experienced merchants have noticed.
  3. 3.A masked buyer visits the spice court after dark and pays double for herbs associated with poison, sleep, and memory loss.
  4. 4.The old well beneath the market is deeper than anyone admits, and voices can sometimes be heard below it after midnight.
  5. 5.A merchant on Cloth Row sells ordinary-looking scarves that are enchanted to hide the wearer's face from casual recognition.
  6. 6.One of the posted contracts was written by a noble in disguise, who is trying to recover a stolen family heirloom without involving the town guard.
  7. 7.The bazaar's auctioneer has been selling confiscated goods before they officially enter the evidence ledger.

Classified Entry

A sealed service tunnel runs beneath the eastern stalls and connects the moneychanger's booth to an abandoned cellar outside the market walls. The tunnel was built during the bazaar's reconstruction to move valuable goods during unrest, but it is now used by a small smuggling ring. Mara Venn knows the tunnel exists but believes it has been unused for years. In truth, Nella Quill has discovered the entrance and is being blackmailed into laundering counterfeit coins through the market. The smugglers are planning to move a stolen signet ring and several coded letters through the tunnel during the next auction.
